Harvard Wins 2003 EISL Championship

There was plenty of drama on the final night of the Eastern Intercollegiate Swimming League championships at Long Island's Nassau County Aquatics Center. It was Harvard who went home with the team trophy, its seventh in the last eight years.
One of the more dramatic moments of the evening came in the leadoff event when Harvard's John Cole, who was cruising to victory in the 1650 free, stopped twice to clear his goggles and to rip off his cap. Cole just out-touched second-place Greg Palumbo. Cole's winning time was 15:17.00, while Palumbo was just .54 behind.
Dan Shevchik won his third individual event, taking the 200 back in 1:44.61. Both Cole and Shevchik, along with Princeton'sJesse Gage won the award for the high point-scorer of the meet. Shevchik also won the award for the high point-scorer among all seniors in their careers.
Princeton established three more meet records on the evening. Gage won the 100-yard freestyle in 43.76 seconds, and teammate Carl Hessler set a new mark in the 200 fly with a time of 1 minute, 45.30 seconds. He narrowly out-touched Harvard's James Lawler (1:45.35). The Tigers' 400 free relay of Gage, Mike Salerno, Justin Chiles and Hessler set a meet record in the 400 free relay with a time of 2:56.56.
The Outstanding Diver Award went to Harvard's Ricky Roy, who tonight won the 3-meter competition with 528.60 points. Earlier in the meet, he took the 1-meter crown.
