When Joe Nieuwendyk returned to his alma mater with the Stanley Cup on July 11, he helped kick off the annual Cornell hockey alumni weekend, and he helped add to the Tallman Family Fund in honor of former teammate Mike Tallman. An Ithaca native, Tallman sustained a serious spinal cord injury while playing in a pick up hockey game in April. Proceeds from the weekend’s activities brought in over $49,500 for the Fund.

While Tallman’s injury is not life threatening, it has caused him to experience paralysis below his waist. The prognosis is currently unknown, but indications are that Mike will need the use of a wheelchair for the foreseeable future.

Created by a group of the Tallman family's close friends, including former Cornell hockey teammates Casey Jones and Neil Paterson, the Tallman Family Fund is designed to provide support mechanisms necessary to getting Mike firmly on the road to recovery. All proceeds donated to the Tallman Family Fund will be used at the family's discretion to cover necessary expenses such as: rehabilitation, wheelchair, home renovations, vehicle, etc.

Nieuwendyk brought the Stanley Cup to the annual alumni game and fans lined up throughout Lynah Rink, out the door and up the street for hours to see and have their pictures taken with Joe and the Cup.

A three-time Stanley Cup winner (Calgary, Dallas, New Jersey), Nieuwendyk has played in 1,113 games during his 16-year NHL career and recorded his 500th NHL goal, 500th NHL assist and 1,000th NHL point during the 2002-03 season. Nieuwendyk won the Calder Trophy (Rookie of the Year) in 1988, the King Clancy Memorial Trophy (for leadership and humanitarian contribution) in 1989 and the Conn Smythe Trophy as MVP of the 1999 Stanley Cup Playoffs. He also has an Olympic gold medal.

An admission charge of $5 per person was collected and that alone brought in over $8,500. Ithaca Photo was generous enough to donate staff time and equipment and offered a professional photo to everyone for $20, which added up to an additional $4,000 going to the fund.

After the alumni game, Nieuwendyk took the cup for a visit to one of his college hangouts, Dunbars, where owner Dave “Pep” Pepin collected a cover charge and sold T-shirts to benefit the Fund, raising another $2,400.

Many people also contributed additional money to assist the Tallman family. Altogether, Joe’s appearance with the Cup in Ithaca helped raise over $18,000 for the Tallman Fund.

The Cornell hockey family continued its efforts on Saturday, with all proceeds of the annual golf outing and auction going to the fund. Competitive play on the course, even more competitive bidding at the auction, and additional donations netted an additional $31,500.

The Cornell hockey program would like to thank teammates, everyone who came out to see Nieuwendyk and the Stanley Cup, Ithaca Photo, Dunbars, friends and family and fans of hockey, who came out to support the Tallman Family Fund.
