Villanova, Pa. - Kevin Lowe will always be known as a feeder first -- except when he gets to overtime in a championship game. Then he becomes perhaps the greatest clutch goal scorer the sport has ever known.
Lowe, a 1994 Princeton graduate, scored 22 seconds into overtime to give the Long Island Lizards a 15-14 win over the Baltimore Bayhawks in a thrilling Major League Lacrosse championship game in front of 6,593 at Villanova Stadium.
Lowe's overtime goal came 11 years after he was the leading scorer on Princeton's first NCAA championship team and nine years after he scored in overtime to defeat Virginia for Princeton's second NCAA title. In doing so, he became the first player ever to score in overtime to win an NCAA and MLL championship.
"Nothing will ever be better than 1992," said Lowe, Princeton's career leader in assists with 174 and points with 247. "I wasn't really thinking about scoring in overtime again. When we were getting ready for overtime, I did think about [Princeton coach] Bill Tierney a little."
Lowe's goal was his fourth of the day, to go along with an assist, and his five-point effort and game-winner made him an easy choice as the game's Most Valuable Player. Besides Lowe, it was a huge day for Princetonians on both teams.
Chris Massey, a 1998 grad, scored three times for the Lizards, including a huge goal as time expired in third quarter to make it 10-8 entering the fourth quarter. Josh Sims '00 of the Bayhawks also had three goals, including the most spectacular goal of the day early in the fourth quarter when he beat three defensemen and the goalie.
Penn Head Coach Brian Voelker is also a part of the championship squad from Long Island. He is a key defenseman for the Lizards.
The entire game was a back-and-forth affair that saw several momentum swings. Long Island led 11-8 early in the fourth quarter before Baltimore rallied, and neither team led by more than one down the stretch.
The score was 14-14 with slightly more than a minute left when Lowe committed a turnover. Baltimore had two chances to win in the final minute but never got off a good shot, and the game headed to overtime.
Chris Cercy, the 2001 Syracuse grad, won the face-off for Long Island to start overtime after a mini-scrum with Baltimore's Paul Cantabene off the draw, and the ball came ahead to Virginia grad Jay Jalbert, who fed it to Lowe all alone in the middle. Lowe caught it and fired high past Baltimore goalie Greg Cattrano, from Brown.
"I just caught it and shot it as hard as I can," said Lowe, whose wife Sara is expecting their first child. "I thought he might look low, so I shot it high. It's a great feeling."
One he's had before.
NOTES - Princeton's Jon Hess, who led the league in assists, was presented the league Sportsmanship Award at halftime; Hess is unlikely to play again next season ... Lowe was named the league's Newcomer of the Year ... Jalbert was named league MVP ... other award winners included Rookie of the Year Adam Doneger (Johns Hopkins) of Rochester, whose brother Jason is a Princeton junior, and Goalie of the Year ... in addition to Massey and Lowe, Long Island also featured Damien Davis '03, who did not dress for the game ... Baltimore also featured Princeton assistant coach Shawn Nadelen, who played longstick and shortstick defense ... Baltimore and Long Island have met in each of the first three MLL championships, with Long Island having won the first and third and Baltimore having won last year ... among the Princetonians in attendance at the game were head coach Bill Tierney, assistant coach David Metzbower and 2001 graduates Trevor Tierney of New Jersey, Matt Striebel of Bridgeport and Matt Bailer, as well as league-co-founder David Morrow '93 .
