Kate and Laura O'Neill, who both graduated Yale in 2003, qualified to represent the United States at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Brussels, Belgium this March.
At the U.S. Cross Country Championships in Indianapolis on Saturday, Kate placed fourth (27.38) and Laura finished sixth (27.45) in the 8,000-meter race. The top six finishers in each race are eligible for the World Championships. In addition to the O'Neill twins, another pair of sisters, Kathleen and Amanda Trotter, qualified in the junior race.
In their four years at Yale, the O'Neills were cross country and track standouts. They shared the Nellie Pratt Elliott Award presented to the senior female athlete who has shown excellence and sportsmanship on the playing field. The O'Neills, who share 11 All-America honors and own six Yale records, were both Academic All-Americans last spring.
Princeton graduate Lynn Jennings won the U.S. Cross Country Championship nine times between 1985 and 1996.
