| Ivy
co-champions Brown cleaned up in the awards department as the duo of Yann
Danis (St. Jerome, Que.) and Brian
Ihnacak (Toronto, Ont.) swept Player and Rookie of the
Year honors. The Bears posted a total of four players on both first and
second All-Ivy teams. Fellow co-champ Cornell also had four players
on both teams, while Dartmouth had three, and Harvard had one.
Dominating in first team voting, Danis was a uninamimous All-Ivy selection,
after being named second team All-Ivy last season. The senior netminder
garnered Player of the Year after leading Brown to a 7-2-1 Ivy record
and its first championship since 1995. The Bears finished up the regular
season at 15-9-5 overall and 13-7-2 in ECAC play. Named ECAC Goalie of
the Week five times and Player of the Week once, Danis leads the Ivy League
and the ECAC in save percentage and is second in the nation in that category
(.946). He is also fourth in the country in goals against average at 1.70.
In addition, the Hobey Baker candidate was selected as the Hockey Commissioners'
Association player of the Month in November and a was a two-time USCHO
Defensive Player of the Week pick.
Making
his impression felt during his rookie campaign, Rookie of the Year Ihnacak
recorded 13 points in Ivy play (4g, 9a) and 30 overall (10g, 20a), leading
the Bears in scoring and the Ivy league in freshman scoring. He is among
the top 15 in ECAC point scoring, and leads in power play points. The
frosh forward has also been named ECAC Rookie of the Week three times
this season. Joining Danis and Ihnacak is senior Scott
Ford (Fort St. John, B.C.). The defenseman ranks fourth
on the Brown squad in scoring with 15 points (6g, 9a) and picked up seven
points (2g, 5a) in Ivy league play.
Lee Stempniak (West Seneca,
N.Y.) and Grant Lewis (Upper
St. Clair, Pa.) represent Dartmouth on the first team. The twosome are
second and third on the list for Dartmouth’s point producers. A
junior forward, Stempniak has 11 points in Ivy play (5g, 6a) and 32 overall
14g, 18a). One of seven players to finish in double digits for the Big
Green, Stempniak was named ECAC Player of the Week Jan. 19. Rookie defenseman
Lewis broke out for the Big Green, scoring 25 points (3g, 22a) this season,
and 11 (2g, 9a) in Ivy competition. Lewis is among the top 15 assist leaders
in the nation.
Representing
Cornell, Matt Moulson (Mississauga,
Ont.) and Ryan Vesce (Lloyd
Harbor, N.Y.) round out the first team. A unanimous pick, Moulson, a second-year
foward, gets his first All-Ivy nod. He leads the Big Red and the Ivy League
in point scoring with 17 (9g, 8a). Overall he posted 34 points (18g, 16a)
and ranks among the top 10 in the country in goals per game. Moulson was
drafted in the ninth round of the NHL draft by Pittsburgh last season.
Vesce, a senior forward, gets his second All-Ivy first team selection.
With 16 points (6g, 10a), Vesce is just behind Moulson in Ivy League points
and recorded 25 (10g, 15a) overall en route to leading Cornell to its
third consecutive Ivy title. He also earned ECAC Player of the Week in
November.
The ECAC hockey playoffs get underway this weekend, with the best-of-three
first round series beginning Friday evening. The top three teams mentioned
above -- Brown, Cornell and Dartmouth -- received a bye for the first
round of playoffs. Meanwhile, Harvard, Princeton, and Yale will have to
battle it out with Vermont, Rensselaer, and St. Lawrence for a shot at
the ECAC crown.
