Silver For Herschmiller

Princeton graduate Thomas Herschmiller picked up the Ivy League's fourth medal of the Athens Games on Saturday, claiming Silver in the Men's Fours in rowing. And -- like Adam Nelson in the shot put -- the gold medal was within very close reach.
Herschmiller's Canadian Four led the boat from Great Britain heading into the final 500 meters, but the Brits crossed the line less than a tenth-of-a-second ahead of Canada in the end. A 2001 Princeton grad, Herschmiller rowed for the Canadian eight in Sydney, finishing seventh overall.
Two other Ivy Leaguers rowed in the medal final, but did not gain the hardware. Brown graduate Nikola Stojic rowed in pairs for Serbia-Montenegro and finished fifth with partner Mladen Stegic. Harvard's Henry Nuzum was in the double sculls final with Aquil Abdullah, but the duo finished outside the medals in sixth.
There were a number of Leaguers competing in the 'B' Finals on Saturday (determining places seventh through 12th) and four of them won those finals. Barnard's Stacey Borgman teamed with Lisa Schlenker to win the lightweight double sculls while Harvard's Greg Ruckman and his partner Steve Tucker did the same in the men's race.
The Serbian-Montenegro lightweight four boat with bow Veljko Urosevic (Columbia) and stroke Milos Tomic (Columbia) claimed the 'B' Final as well.
Five Ivy Leaguers will have a shot at Gold on Sunday with Michelle Guerette (Harvard) and Danika Harris-Holbrook (Princeton) in the quadruple sculls, Caryn Davies (Harvard) and Lianne Nelson (Princeton) in the women's eight and Chris Ahrens (Princeton) in the men's eight. Both U.S. eights set world records in qualifying directly to the final from the first round.
