All-Ivy Football -- 2004

When it sweeps through an entire season without a loss, a team can expect a number of rewards to come its way. And that was certainly true for the Harvard Crimson football team, the nation’s only Division I-AA program to go unbeaten in 2004. Harvard, which went 10-0 and 7-0 in conference action, led the All-Ivy League team with 15 selections overall, including eight first-team selections – matching the most ever for a Crimson team (also 2001).
Senior quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick (Gilbert, Ariz.) was unanimously chosen by the League’s eight head coaches as the recipient of the Asa S. Bushnell Cup, given annually to the Ivy League’s most outstanding performer. Fitzpatrick has certainly proven to be one of the most dynamic quarterbacks in Ivy history.
Fitzpatrick threw for more than 5,000 career yards and rushed for nearly 1,500 more, but the best measure of his impact was demonstrated in his team’s success. Harvard won 18 of Fitzie’s 21 career starts, including 15 of the last 16 as well as the last 11. And if it weren’t for a mid-season injury last season, he might have been chasing a number of all-time Ivy records this season. Instead he focused on closing his career the same way it began -- with a perfect season.
Harvard sophomore tailback Clifton Dawson (Scarborough, Ont.) and senior wide receiver Brian Edwards (Los Gatos, Calif.), like Fitzpatrick, were unanimous choices of the coaches. Dawson danced his way to a 1,302-yard, 17-touchdown season as he becomes a serious challenger to Ed Marinaro’s Ivy League career records which have stood for more than three decades. Edwards had not only a 50-catch season, but he also had four returns (kick or punt) for touchdowns and threw for another score.
Two other offensive players were chosen unanimously. Cornell senior lineman Kevin Boothe (Plantation, Fla.) is a dominant force for the Big Red. Coach Jim Knowles, who has been with Bowl-bound Division I-A programs, calls Boothe one of the best linemen he has ever coached. The final player who was on everyone’s offensive ballot was Brown’s punishing junior running back Nick Hartigan (Fairfax Station, Va.). Like Dawson, Hartigan ran for 17 touchdowns while racking up more than 32 carries a game. He had his second straight 1,000-yard season as well.
Two defensive players and a punter were also unanimous selections. Harvard senior linebacker Bobby Everett (Ann Arbor, Mich.) continued the Crimson’s strong tradition at the position while Penn senior defensive back Duvol Thompson (Calumet City, Ill.) has turned into a pro prospect in the secondary. Quaker senior Josh Appell (Woodmere, N.Y.) led the League in punting average (by about four yards per punt no less) and wound up on every ballot.
For Harvard, joining Fitzpatrick, Dawson, Edwards and Everett on the first team were senior offensive lineman Brian Lapham (Sanford, Maine), junior offensive lineman Will Johnson (Tustin, Calif.), freshman kicker Matt Schindel (Coral Springs, Fla.) and senior defensive back Sean Tracy (Winchester, Ohio). In Harvard’s recent run of success, the kicking game had been an uncertainty until Schindel shored up that position for the League champion.
Four of Penn’s five first-team selections were defenders -- including Thompson and Appell. The other two defenders were senior lineman Michael Sangobowale (Bronx, N.Y.) and senior linebacker Luke Hadden (Moorestown, N.J.). The lone Quaker offensive first-teamer was senior wide receiver Dan Castles (Toms River, N.J.), who broke the school record for career touchdown catches in his days in the Red and Blue.
The Brown Bears boasted of the League’s Rookie of the Year, freshman kicker and punter Steve Morgan (New Albany, Ohio). Morgan booted 13 field goals and made every extra point for Coach Phil Estes while also handling punting duties as well. He was named second-team as a kicker and honorable mention as a punter. And joining Hartigan on the first team for the Bears were junior wide receiver Jarrett Schreck (Montville, N.J.), senior offensive lineman Will Burroughs (Yuma, Ariz.) and sophomore linebacker Zak DeOssie (North Andover, Mass.).
Coach Bob Shoop’s Columbia Lions had a first-teamer on offense and defense. Senior tight end Wade Fletcher (Littleton, Colo.) was chosen despite missing the first two games of the season. That didn’t stop him from posting League tight end highs in both catches and yards. Meanwhile, senior defensive lineman Michael Quarshie (Helsinki, Finland) completed his improbable journey from Finland to first-team.
Dartmouth had three defenders joining the first team -- senior lineman Ryan Conger (Randolph, N.J.), junior lineman Anthony Gargiulo (Neshanic Station, N.J.) and senior defensive back Clayton Smith (Atlanta, Ga.) Gargiulo led the League with 12 quarterback sacks while Smith showcased his playmaking abilities with four interceptions and four blocked kicks as a senior.
The Princeton Tigers had two well-known defenders on the first team, including the League’s top tackler in senior linebacker Zak Keasey (Clarkston, Mich.). Keasey twice had 20 tackles in Ivy games. The other awardee was junior defensive back Jay McCareins (Naperville, Ill.), who was a triple threat as a defender, pass receiver and kick blocker.
The Yale Bulldogs had a single first-teamer in talented senior offensive lineman Rory Hennessey (Strongsville, Ohio) while three senior school recordholders were chosen to the second team -- quarterback Alvin Cowan (Austin, Texas), running back Robert Carr (Baytown, Texas) and receiver Ralph Plumb (Portsmouth, R.I.).
Cornell finished third in the League as the offense moved behind big Kevin Boothe, but no other Big Red player was named to the first team. Despite that, Cornell put one of the League’s top defenses on the field game-in, game-out. Two of those defenders -- senior lineman Ryan Lempa (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.) and junior back Kevin Rex (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) -- were picked to the second team.
