Ivy Leaguers have performed a wide variety of sports at the Olympic Games over the decades. Everything from golf to skeleton; from taekwondo to rugby; and from biathlon to modern pentathlon. If Princeton junior Matt Mielke has his way, he'll add curling to that list in 2010.
Mielke is off to a great start, as his team claimed the junior national championship in Duluth, Minn., earlier this month. Now, during the Olympics, he spends his time watching guys he has played before and explaining the sport to his classmates.
The quick overview is that one person slides a 42-pound rock 90 feet down a sheet of ice, trying to have their rock the closest to the center of a target. Each team also has sweepers, who use brooms to polish the ice to make the rock move faster or even change course.
Mielke and his team will now head to the Junior Worlds in Korea on March 11.
"I wouldn't define myself as a curler, but it's a very important part of who I am," he told Sandy Zaeh of the Princetonian. "The sport has taught me a lot about teamwork. Now that curling is gaining public recognition, it's nice to be an ambassador for the sport."
