Day One
The Ivy League had another strong day at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., on Saturday. The top finishers were Cornell junior Morgan Uceny, fourth in the 800-meter run, and Princeton senior Cack Ferrell, fourth in the 3,000.
Uceny, who has been strong all season long, finished in 2:06.55, less than a second behind the winning time of Heather Dorniden, a freshman at Minnesota.
She was not the lone Ivy All-American on the track, as Yale sophomore Lindsay Donaldson was seventh in the mile run in 4:43.74. Northern Arizona's Johanna Nilsson dusted the field in that event, clocking a two-and-a-half second victory in 4:37.78.
Nilsson returned to win the 3,000-meter run an hour-and-a-half later, as Ferrell was fourth (9:13.42) and Harvard sophomore Lindsey Scherf was ninth (9:26.36).
Brown senior Brittany Grovey has a remarkable performance in the triple jump. Recently named the Northeast Region Field Athlete of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, Grovey went better than 42 feet in all six of her attempts. Prior to Grovey, no Ivy League triple jumper had EVER soared 42 feet in the triple jump indoor. Her best mark of 43-1 3/4 was good for ninth place overall.
Harvard senior Samyr Laine, also a triple jumper who won the Coaches Association Northeast award, was 12th with a best of 50-9 1/2. The League's final competitor, Yale senior Molly Lederman, was 14th in the pole vault with a clearance of 12-7 1/2.
