Thompson Claims Fritz Pollard Award

Brown Athletics and the Black Coaches Association are co-sponsoring a welcome session with John Thompson III, the head basketball coach at Georgetown University, on Friday night at the Petteruti Lounge at Faunce House. Thompson will be recognized as the 2006 recipient of the Fritz Pollard Award, presented annually by the Black Coaches Association to its Male Coach of the Year.
In addition, Bernard Muir '90, former Brown basketball standout and current athletic director at Georgetown, will be in attendance along with Brown head basketball coach Craig Robinson. Students, faculty, staff and the local community are invited to attend the event that will feature remarks by Thompson, followed by a question and answer session. Light refreshments will be served.
Thompson was named the BCA Male Coach of the Year after leading Georgetown to a 23-10 record and a berth in the NCAA Sweet 16 last year, his second season as head coach of the Hoyas. Georgetown, which toppled then No. 1-ranked Duke in January, was ranked among the top-25 teams in the country for the final eight weeks of the season. In six years at the collegiate level, Thompson has a career record of 110-65, including a 68-42 mark at Princeton, and has led teams to the NCAA Tournament three times and to the NIT twice.
The Fritz Pollard Award is named in honor of Frederick Douglass "Fritz" Pollard, Brown Class of 1919, and a recent inductee into the Professional Football Hall of Fame, who led Brown's football team to the 1916 Rose Bowl game. Pollard went on to become the first African American quarterback and head coach in the NFL.
