IVY LEAGUE WEEKLY RELEASE
Volume 15, March 5, 2007
PLAYER
OF THE WEEK
Senior guard Jim Goffredo (La Crescenta, Calif.) turned in a big weekend in his final games in a Harvard uniform. He recorded game-highs of 32 points in a win at Cornell Saturday night and 24 points at Columbia on Saturday to finish with a 28.0 point average. He shot 18-for-33 (.545) overall, 11-for-21 (.524) from three-point range and nine-for-10 from the free throw line. Against Cornell, Goffredo was seven-of-10 from three-point range to become the first player in school history to have three 30-point scoring games. At Columbia on Saturday Goffredo became the school’s all-time leader in games played with 108.
ROOKIE
OF THE WEEK
Cornell freshman point guard Louis Dale (Birmingham, Ala.) averaged 14.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists in a weekend split, shooting 50 percent from the floor, hitting three-of-four three-pointers and turning the ball over just once in 57 minutes of action. The freshman was outstanding in picking up his first career double-double in the season finale against Dartmouth, scoring 16 points and grabbing a career-best 12 rebounds. He added four assists and one turnover in the victory. On Friday evening against Harvard, Dale posted 12 points, four rebounds and six assists with just one turnover. Dale also made two-of-three shots from beyond the arc.
THE HONOR ROLL
Brown senior guard Damon Huffman (Petoskey, Mich.) led the Bears to a season sweep of Princeton and a record third straight win over the Tigers by scoring a game-high 22 points against the Tigers, connecting on five-of-eight shots from behind the three point arc, and six-of-six free throws. With Brown clinging to a 58-55 lead against the Tigers, Huffman delivered the dagger with a 24-foot three-point basket with 1:10 left to put the game away and extend the Bears' lead to 61-55. Huffman also added 16 points in Brown's 64-55 loss to Penn, scoring all 16 points in the first half, including Brown's last 14 points of the half that included four treys and a baseline jump shot.
Columbia junior forward John Baumann (Westport, Conn.) shot 14-of-17 (.824) from the floor, .500 from the behind the arc and .800 from the charity stripe, averaging 17 points and 4.5 rebounds in a 2-0 week for Columbia that solidified the Lions' best record since 1992-93. He went eight-of-10 from the field for 19 points vs. Dartmouth and went six-of-seven versus Harvard for 15 points. It was Baumann's 23rd double-digit scoring effort and the 18th time this season he's shot better than .500 from the floor.
Cornell senior center Andrew Naeve (Miles, Iowa) closed out his excellent career with a bang, averaging 21.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and a blocked shot while shooting 57 percent from the floor and making all 10 free throw attempts. Naeve began the
weekend with 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots
against Harvard, then notched a career-high 21 points and added five
rebounds and two assists in a win over Dartmouth. He made all seven of his
charity shots and hit on seven-of-12 field goals in the win.
Senior Leon Pattman (Memphis, Tenn.) poured in a game-high 22 points at Columbia, including a four-of-seven effort beyond the arc. It was the fifth time this season that he surpassed 20 points (he played in only 19 games) and the 15th time that he reached double figures. He also had five boards against the Lions.
With the Ivy League title within reach Friday night against Yale, Mark Zoller (Blue Bell, Pa.) put up one of the most complete scorelines you will see. The senior scored 22 points, his 11th game this season when he has reached the 20-point mark; he snared 17 rebounds, which was one shy of his career high (set last year); dished out six assists, tying a career high for the third time in four games; blocked four shots, again one shy of a career best; and came up with four steals. He did all that despite being taken out with four minutes left in the game because of the lopsided score. Zoller followed that up with a game Saturday against Brown in which he was plagued by foul trouble, but still managed to record 10 points, four boards and two assists in just 18 minutes. For the weekend, Zoller shot 14-of-20 (70 percent) from the field.
Freshman point guard Marcus Schroeder (Concord, Calif.) scored a career-high 17 points and grabbed a career-best six rebounds for Princeton in a 52-51 loss to Yale on Saturday. He shot four-of-eight from the field and seven-of-eight from the line and also added three assists while playing all 40 minutes. A day earlier, he had a then career-best 13 points, shooting five-of-nine from the field, and added three steals in 40 minutes in a loss to Brown. Schroeder is Princeton's leading scorer (7.9 ppg) in Ivy League play.
Yale junior guard Eric Flato (Piedmont, Calif.) averaged 12 points and four assists in two games last week. In a 52-51 victory over Princeton, Flato played all 40 minutes, had 13 points, three assists and two steals as the Bulldogs clinched a second-place Ivy finish. Against Penn the night before, he had 11 points, five assists and three steals. Flato finished the season with 71 three-pointers, one shy of the school record and 50 steals, the second most in a single season in Yale history. In addition, he led Yale in scoring (15.3 ppg.) and assists (96). In 14 Ivy League games, Flato averaged 16.4 points.
Senior guard Ibrahim Jaaber (Elizabeth, N.J.) provided a nice complement to his fellow senior on Friday night, putting together nice scoreline himself: 13 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and three steals. He followed that up with a superior performance Saturday against Brown, scoring 22 points (16 in the second half), dishing off six assists (four in the second half) and grabbing seven boards (four in the second half). Thanks to his heroics the Quakers were able to down the Bears and complete their third-straight undefeated home campaign against Ivy League opponents.
