CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard Athletics saw its Crimson “Go
Green” this year with the department making a push to collect more recyclables
during football games at historic Harvard Stadium. Ensuing results showed the
single-best recycling initiative in Harvard history.
Coordinated by Harvard Athletics’ Facilities & Operations department
as well as the University’s Facilities Maintenance Operations group, the
program collected 4.1 tons of its refuse from its five football games.
The figures, reported by Rob Gogan, Supervisor of Recycling at Harvard, show over
1.6 tons of paper and cardboard as well as nearly 2.5 tons of container recycling.
In its season finale Harvard shut out Yale by a score of 10-0 in a contest that
has become known simply as The Game. While the Crimson was putting the finishing
touches on its 13th Ivy League championship, the athletic department was beginning
efforts that resulted in recovering over 4,600 pounds of cardboard, bottles, cans,
cups and containers alone – weighing over 18,000 pounds.
The savings equate to the following impressive numbers as the department shows
itself to be a leader in recycling among its University peers and fellow athletic
departments; 17 trees were saved, sparing 1,828 square feet of pulpwood; the department
conserved four months worth of household energy use and saved 28,700 gallons of
water and 544 cubic yards of trash.
Additionally, the recycling efforts prevented 2.5 tons of carbon dioxide from
being released, equivalent to driving a car nonstop for 21 weeks.
