Week 5, October 12, 2009

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Brown junior quarterback KYLE NEWHALL (Gilbert, Ariz.) out-dueled Holy Cross’ All-American quarterback Dominic Randolph and established a new Ivy League record with 46 completions on 61 attempts, while accumulating 431 passing yards in the Bears’ 34-31 upset win over the Crusaders. His 46 completions broke the previous Ivy League mark of 44 completions by Brown’s Kyle Slager against Rhode Island on October 5, 2002. Newhall also threw two touchdown passes of 10 and 22 yards and ran for another score on a seven-yard run. Newhall ran for 14 yards and his 445 yards of total offense rank ninth in the Brown record book, and 21st in Ivy football history.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Princeton senior linebacker SCOTT BRITTON (Newtown, Pa.) recorded 16 tackles, including 2.5 for losses, and a sack against the No. 1 rushing offense in the nation in the Tigers’ 21-14 double-overtime loss to Top 25 foe Colgate. Britton helped limit the Raiders to 168 yards rushing through 60 minutes of regulation time, 109 fewer than their season average.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Brown junior defensive back/placekicker PATRICK ROONEY (Wheaton, Ill.) was called into the game against Holy Cross after the Bears had missed two field goals and an extra point. As Rooney was warming up to kick late in the third quarter, the Brown press box called down to the field to find out who was warming up, since there are two number 10’s on the roster. On the first play of the fourth quarter, he made his first varsity appearance as a placekicker and connected on a 31-yard field goal to extend Brown’s lead to 23-17. With the score tied 31-31 in the waning moments of the game, Rooney booted a 34-yard field goal with four seconds remaining to lift the Bears to the stunning 34-31 victory over the Crusaders.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Harvard freshman running back TREAVOR SCALES (Stone Mountain, Ga.) scored the first two rushing touchdowns of his career, running for 92 yards on 23 carries (4.0 yards per carry) in the Crimson’s 28-10 win at Cornell. Scales was a part of a Harvard rushing attack that totalled 251 yards on the ground and accounted all four touchdowns against the Big Red.
