All-Ivy Women's Soccer -- 2009
Created: 11/12/2009 2:14:05 PM

PRINCETON, N.J. — In a season that saw much parity around the League, this year's women's soccer All-Ivy team is reflective of that theme, with seven of eight Ivy teams represented on the first team and only one program with more than two honorees.

Leading the way with three first team members is Dartmouth, who used strong play from its veteran midfield to finish in tie for third-place with Penn. Senior midfielders Myra Sack, Kelsey Quick and Allison Hubbard all earned first team accolades for the Big Green.

Sack earns her third All-Ivy selection, and second straight as a first-teamer, after starting all 17 games for Dartmouth. She finished third on the team with 10 points on three goals and four assists. Quick, an honorable mention performer a season ago, was the Big Green's second leading scorer with 12 points on three goals and six assists. She finished in the League's top ten in shots (35), points (12), assists (6) and game-winning goals (3). After a second team and honorable mention nod as a sophomore and junior, Hubbard becomes a first team pick for the first time. She had three assists and a goal on the year.

League runner-ups Yale were one of two teams to ring in with two first teamers -- 2009 Ivy League Player of the Year Becky Brown and senior defender Sophia Merrifield.

Brown, a junior forward and the only player to receive unanimous votes from the Ivy coaches, becomes the first Bulldog to earn the League's highest individual honor since Jen Teti won back-to-back Player of the Year awards in 1992 and 1993. An honorable mention and second team selection as a freshman and sophomore, Brown exploded for 13 goals this season, good enough for second in the Ivies and fourth most in Yale single-season history. She also added four assists for 30 points on the year.

Merrifield becomes the only member of this year's women's soccer Ivy graduating class to earn All-Ivy honors in each of her four years. It is her second first team selection after helping anchor a Yale defense that posted seven shutouts and yielded just 16 goals all season.

Princeton rounds out schools with multiple first team honorees with senior defender Melissa Seitz and junior goalkeeper Alyssa Pont. Seitz and Pont both started all games and spearheaded a dominant Tiger defense that ranked first in the League in goals allowed (14), goals against average (0.78) and shutouts (8). Individually, Seitz added a goal on the year, while Pont led the Ivies in save percentage (.833) and saves (70).

Harvard, who won its second consecutive League title and first outright in exactly a decade, had one first team honoree in junior forward Katherine Sheeleigh. The former Ivy Rookie of the Year tallied eight goals and was relentless up front for the Ivy champs, leading the League in shots (69). Her clutch two-goal performance versus Dartmouth in the second-to-last weekend of the season, carried the Crimson to a huge win and, at the time, clinched a share of the Ivy crown.

Brown senior defender Bridget Ballard becomes a three-time All-Ivy selection, after earning honorable mention honors as a sophomore and second team accolades last season as a junior. She started all 15 games this season for the Bears and just last week was named to the 2009 CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District women's soccer team.

Last season's Player of the Year Sophie Reiser of Columbia returns to the first team for the third time. The senior forward ends her career as one of the top women's soccer players in school history and sits atop the Lions' all-time career assists list, ranking second in points and third in goals scored. Reiser tied for the team lead in points this year with seven goals and four assists.

Last but certainly not least on the first team is Penn senior forward Jessica Fuccello. After missing almost all of her junior campaign with an injury, Fuccello returned with a bang, scoring an Ivy-best 16 goals in just 15 games -- tying a school record -- while also leading the League with 35 points. She finishes her career with 36 goals which is second all-time behind Katy Cross (50 from 2001-04).

Princeton's Alison Nabatoff and Yale's Kristen Forster were voted Co-Rookies of the Year, becoming the first honorees to share the award since 1996 for only the second time in Ivy League women's soccer history. Nabatoff was a welcomed addition to Princeton's stingy defense that held Ivy League opponents to a league-low total of five goals in Ivy matches, including a shutout list that counted Brown, Columbia, Cornell and league champion Harvard. She is the fourth Tiger in program history and first since 2004 to win the award.

Forster, a freshman midfielder relished her role as Yale's setup person, registering a League-best nine assists to go with her two goals. Those nine assists tied her with Crysti Howser for the most by a freshman in a season in Yale history. Coincidentally, Howser was the last Bulldog to capture Rookie of the Year honors.

Harvard led the way with four second team members, followed by Penn with three and Columbia with two.
