PRINCETON, N.J. -- For the first time since 1977 (five teams), the Ivy League will have four teams in the NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament. Ivy Champion Harvard will be joined by Brown, Dartmouth and Princeton in the 48-team field, which begins play on Thursday, Nov. 19th.
Team Profiles
HARVARD
National Seed - 10th (13-3-1 overall; 5-1-1 Ivy League)
After winning the Ivy League title and earning the conference’s automatic bid, the Harvard men’s soccer team has earned the No. 10 seed in the 2009 NCAA Division I men’s soccer tournament. The Crimson, which has reached the NCAA tournament four straight seasons, will play the winner of Monmouth and Connecticut in a second-round contest Sunday at Ohiri Field at 1:30 p.m.
Monmouth, which hosts UConn in an opening-round matchup Thursday at noon, won the Northeast Conference tournament, earning a bid to the NCAA tournament. The Hawks went 18-1-1 overall, defeating Quinnipiac, 2-1, in the championship game of their conference tournament. Monmouth, who has never played Harvard on the soccer field, heads to the postseason riding a five-game win streak.
UConn earned an at-large bid out of the Big East Conference, posting an 11-4-3 record during the regular season. The Huskies are 5-2-0 in their last seven games , losing twice in overtime.The Huskies and Crimson have met 26 times, with UConn owning a 14-8-4 lead in the series. UConn downed Harvard, 4-0, earlier this season in Storrs, Conn., on Oct. 14
BROWN
(10-2-5 overall; 5-2-0 Ivy League)
The Brown men’s soccer team received an At-Large bid in the 2009 Division I Men’s Soccer Tournament, as announced by the NCAA on Monday evening. The Bears will host Stony Brook (6-9-4) at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19, at Stevenson Field.
Stony Brook enters the College Cup with a seven-game unbeaten streak, the longest such stretch since the then Patriots went 7-0-1 to start the 1980 season. The Seawolves won their second America East Conference championship with Sunday's 2-0 win over UMBC.
PRINCETON
(9-5-3 overall; 4-2-1 Ivy League)
The Princeton men's soccer team earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and will host Patriot League champion Bucknell in the first round on Thursday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m., at Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium. Bucknell finished the regular season 16-5 with a 5-2 record in Patriot League.
The winner will play Virginia, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, which earned a first-round bye. That game will be on Sunday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m in Charlottesville, Va.
DARTMOUTH
(10-6-1 overall; 4-3-0 Ivy League)
The Dartmouth men’s soccer team also got the call tonight, and will travel to Boston College this Thursday.
It will be a rematch of last year’s NCAA Second Round game in which Dartmouth, then seeded 16th nationally, advanced past Boston College on penalty kicks. This year the Eagles play host this Thursday, Nov. 19 in Chestnut Hill, Mass. at 7 p.m.
