All-Ivy Football -- 2009
Created: 11/24/2009 5:51:00 PM
PRINCETON, N.J. -- In a season that saw record-breaking offensive numbers and stifling defensive performances, it is only fitting the 2009 Ivy League Football Player of the Year award is shared by players on each side of the ball.

Brown senior wide receiver/return specialist Buddy Farnham and Penn senior linebacker Jake Lewko share the Asa S. Bushnell Cup for the first time since the trophy was initiated in 1970 and shared by Cornell’s Ed Marinaro and Dartmouth’s Jim Chasey. The Bushnell Cup is given annually to the Ivy Football Player of the Year in honor of Asa S. Bushnell, Princeton ’21 and Commissioner of the Eastern College Athletic Conference from 1938 to 1970.

One of the greatest wide receivers in League history, Farnham was a rare three-time first team All-Ivy selection, becoming the 37th player in Ivy history to be selected first team All-Ivy three or more times. He finished the season with 1,003 receiving yards, the eight receiver in Brown history to go over 1,000 yards. His 100.3 receiving yards per game rank fifth in the nation, while his 74 receptions (7.4 per game) in 2009 rank eighth nationally. A true all-around player, Farnham led the Ivy League in scoring (7.2 points per game) and punt returns (10.36 per return). In addition, his 28.57 kickoff return yards per return ranks third in the nation, while his 165.10 all-purpose yards is eighth nationally, earning him first-team Ivy honors as a return specialist as well to go along with his first-team accolades at wide receiver.

As for his storied Brown career, Farnham’s 229 career receptions are sixth in the Ivy record book, his 2,895 career yards are seventh all time in Ivy football history, while his 4,813 all-purpose yards are seventh in the Ivy record book. Farnham also established a new Brown record for punt return yards in a career. He established a new Brown record for punt return yards (636 yards), eclipsing the previous mark of 620 yards by Stephen Campbell from 1997-2000. Farnham finished second in the Brown record book with 1,167 career yards.

Lewko was the first Quaker to earn Ivy League Player of the Year honors since quarterback Mike Mitchell did so after winning the 2003 Ivy title and the first Penn defensive player to win the award since linebacker Pat Goodwillie in 1994.

Lewko led the No. 1 ranked defense in the FCS in tackles with 76, adding two sacks, two fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles and a blocked kick. In guiding Penn to its first Ivy League championship since 2003, the Medford, N.J., native co-captained a defense that allowed fewer points than any other team in Division I college football (FBS or FCS). Lewko and the Penn defense led the Ivy League in nearly every single statistical category -- scoring defense, total defense, rushing defense, pass defense, pass efficiency defense, sacks, first downs allowed, opponent third-down conversions, fewest penalties, fewest penalty yards, turnover margin, time of possession and red zone defense.

Harvard running back Treavor Scales was named as the Ivy League Rookie of the Year and second-team All-Ivy after finishing his rookie year among the League leaders in rushing with 4.5 yards per carry on 485 yards on 108 attempts with five rushing touchdowns, good for third-best in the league. He is the second straight Harvard player to earn top rookie honors after defensive back Matthew Hanson earned the honor last year.

Scales was one of Harvard’s League-leading 19 players to earn All-Ivy League accolades, falling one pick shy of the program's output from the 2007 season and tying for the third-most honorees in league history. Leading the Crimson’s All-Ivy list is senior offensive tackle James Williams, a three-time first-team selection who was also one of seven 2009 unanimous picks. Crimson teammates joining Williams on the first team were senior offensive lineman Ben Sessions, junior running back Gino Gordon, senior defensive back Derrick Barker and junior defensive back Colin Zych.

Penn boasted 18 players receiving All-Ivy recognition with junior offensive lineman Joe D’Orazio and senior defensive lineman Joe Goniprow joining Lewko as the three Quakers garnering unanimous selection to the first team. Senior defensive back Chris Wynn, who was a preseason candidate for the Buck Buchanan Award, and junior placekicker Andrew Samson also earned first-team honors.

Paced by Farnham, Brown earned 14 All-Ivy selections. Eight were named to the first team led by two unanimous selections -- senior offensive lineman Paul Jasinowski, who is a 2009 National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete and a finalist for the Campbell Trophy, and senior defensive lineman James Develin.

Columbia senior defensive lineman Lou Miller, a unanimous pick to the first team, led the Lions’ nine All-Ivy honorees. Senior offensive lineman Jeff Adams and senior wide receiver Austin Knowlin, who finished his career in the League’s top 10 all-time in receptions and all-purpose yards, rounded out Columbia’s first-team selections.

Yale also boasted nine All-Ivy players highlighted by senior punter/placekicker Tom Mante earning first-team honors as a punter and second-team recognition as a placekicker.

Dartmouth and Princeton each had seven players receiving All-Ivy honors with Cornell having six players getting honored.
