PRINCETON, N.J. -- It was no surprise that the top postseason honors for the 2009-10 Ivy League women’s basketball season went the players who led their teams to the best season in their programs’ histories.
Columbia junior forward Judie Lomax became the first player in school history to be named Ivy League Player of the Year and was a unanimous selection for first-team All-Ivy in leading the Lions to their best season in school history. Guiding Princeton to the best regular season in League history and its first trip to the NCAA Tournament, freshman forward Niveen Rasheed earned the unanimous nod as Rookie of the Year, just the second such honor ever for the Tigers, and first-team All-Ivy accolades. Teaming with Lomax for Columbia’s record-breaking season, senior guard Sara Yee captured the Defensive Player of the Year award for the second-straight season.
Lomax was simply superb in her junior campaign, leading the Ivy League in scoring (18.6 ppg), rebounding (14.2 rpg) and steals (2.6 spg), to usher Columbia to the most overall wins (18) and Ivy wins (9) in program history. The Washington, D.C., native is on track to become the first NCAA Division I women’s basketball player in history to lead the nation in rebounding average in consecutive seasons and the first to do so standing under 6-0 tall. An ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, Lomax also leads the country in double-doubles with 21 and ranks in the top 50 nationally in five statistical categories.
A freshman phenom from Danville, Calif., Rasheed wowed the League throughout her rookie season, helping to lead Princeton to an impressive 26-2 overall record, its eighth Ivy title with a perfect 14-0 mark and its first NCAA Tournament bid in school history. She finished the regular season ranked second in the League in scoring and steals (2.3), third in rebounding (8.8) and field goal percentage (50.6) and fifth in assists (2.9), leading the Tigers in all five categories.
Small in height but big in defensive effort, Yee was just one of six players in NCAA Division I listed at 5’1” or shorter and the only one to have started in all of her team’s games this year. She currently ranks sixth in the country in assist-to-turnover ratio at 2.58. Receiving honorable mention All-Ivy honors as well, the Walnut, Calif., native contributed 5.5 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game to propel her Lions to a third-place League finish, its best in program history, and a shot at their first Division I postseason invitation.
Sophomore guard Lauren Edwards joined her Tiger teammate on the first team after being a unanimous Rookie Team selection a year ago. She completed the regular season as Princeton’s second and the League’s fourth-leading scorer at 13.4 points per game. Edwards was among one of the most accurate shooters in the League, ranking fourth in field goal percentage (.498) and third in three-point field goal percentage (.433).
Dartmouth junior forward Brittney Smith received first-team All-Ivy honors for the second-straight year, averaging a double-double (12.1 points and 10.2 rebounds per game) for the Big Green. The 2007-08 Rookie of the Year and 2008-09 Player of the Year also led Dartmouth in field goal percentage (.402), assists (2.2 apg), blocks (1.8 bpg) and steals (1.9 spg).
Another standout among the Ivy junior class, Harvard junior forward Emma Markley rounded out the first team. She led the League in blocks at 2.8 per game, was third in scoring (14.1 ppg) and fifth in rebounding (7.1) in pacing the Crimson to its ninth 20-win season in school history and its eighth postseason berth.
The Rookie Team boasted four unanimous selections for the second consecutive year. Joining Rasheed with unanimous selection to the five-player team were the freshman guard trio of Dartmouth’s Faziah Steen, Harvard’s Victoria Lippert and Yale’s Megan Vasquez. Vasquez led Yale in scoring (11.5 ppg) while Steen (9.4 ppg) and Lippert (13.1 ppg), who was also named second-team All-Ivy, were the second-leading scorer on their respective teams. Cornell freshman forward Clare Fitzpatrick rounded out the Rookie Team, finishing second on the Big Red in rebounding (5.1 rpg) and third in scoring (8.7 ppg).
A trio of Rookie Team members from last season -- Harvard sophomore guard Brogan Berry, the 2008-09 Rookie of the Year, Princeton sophomore center Devona Allgood and Yale sophomore forward Michelle Cashen -- headlined the second-team All-Ivy honorees. Princeton junior guard Addie Micir was fourth Tiger to earn All-Ivy accolades while Cornell senior guard Lauren Benson was the lone senior to make the first or second teams.
A couple of seniors were named honorable mention All-Ivy in Yee and Penn guard Sarah Bucar. Brown sophomore guard Hannah Passafuime and Columbia junior guard Kathleen Barry also earned honorable mention recognition.
