Brown Head Coach Phil Estes (New Hampshire, 1980) 29-10 (fifth season with the Bears) |
|
 |
|
Phil Estes has piled up victories and produced recordholders since taking the helm of the Bear program in 1998. In fact, his recently departed senior class graduated with a four-year record of 29-10, the second-best in school history. And the only class with a better mark was the previous year's seniors, who finished 30-10.
And Estes and his Bears have done it with an impressive offensive show. Since taking over, Brown has averaged more than 33 points and 320 passing yards a game. In 1999, everything came together for the Bears as they claimed their first Ivy title since 1976.

PHIL ESTES speaks about the 2002
season.
Estes On...
...Chas
Gessner
"He has all the qualities of a
Sean Morey and a Stephen Campbell, two great receivers in
Brown history. He comes in with the attitude that he wants
to win and wants to be a part of every play. He will return
kicks and return punts and try to get his hands on the ball
every play. A quality person and an outstanding
athlete."
Estes On...
...the quarterback
position
"There isn't a lot of experience
there. I think right now that Nate Poole has the opportunity
to be the frontrunner and only in the sense of experience
and being with the team for two years and knowing the system
and what we run. Kyle Slager, a transfer from Arizona, is
just an outstanding athlete. They both have strong arms and
I think it's going to come down to the last week before the
first game before we know who the starter is going to
be."

Becoming Brown’s head coach in 1998 was not a tough transition. He had a large stake in the players’ success, serving as the team’s recruiting coordinator from 1994 to 1997. He took over as the receiving coach in 1997 after previously working with the Bear running backs.
Every major season record at Brown has happened in the Estes’ brief tenure.
A graduate of the University of New Hampshire, Estes embarked upon his collegiate coaching career at his alma mater in 1984 after a two-year stint at the high school level.
As the team’s offensive coordinator, Estes was instrumental in leading the Wildcats to their first-ever appearance in the I-AA playoffs after winning the Yankee Conference championship in 1991. After two more successful seasons, he joined Mark Whipple at Brown. Estes had coached with Whipple at UNH in the late ‘80s.
A three-year starter and a captain for New Hampshire, Estes was a first-team All-New England and Yankee Conference selection as a senior and a member of the Wildcats’ 1976 Yankee Conference Championship squad.
A native of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Estes grew up in Laconia, N.H., where he was a star lineman. He has since been inducted into the Laconia High School Hall of Fame.
Estes and his wife, Katie, reside in East Greenwich, R.I., with their two daughters, Meghan and Kelly, and their son, Brett.
