Cornell Head Coach Tim Pendergast (SUNY/Cortland, 1980)
2-7 (second season with the Big Red)
Tim Pendergast, a member of the Big Red coaching staff in the 1980s, has concluded his first season as Cornell's head coach. In his first season, the Big Red captured two consecutive road victories against Princeton and Dartmouth. In 2001, the team averaged over 20 points per game with a newly designed balanced offensive attack. During the season, the team averaged over 120 rushing yards per game and over 230 yards through the air.

Tim Pendergast speaks about the 2002 season.

...adjusting to his new team…

"I feel a lot more comfortable. I think that in many ways not only to the players but to the staff last year we were like a bunch of freshmen and we had to learn about each other. It takes a little bit of time to build up the trust. It takes a little time for the players to know what you want in a general system. Not just the X's and O's but how to operate on and off the field in the manner that we want. I'm pleased to say that the players have tremendous cohesion with us right now. We had an outstanding offseason and I think this team will improve."

...his quarterback position…

"We graduated Ricky Rahne who ended up his career as the third all-time leading passer in terms of yards in the Ivy League. It's hard to replace someone of that ability. But yet in some ways we feel as though we are ready to move on. We are ready to welcome a new quarterback, whoever it happens to be. We've got three young men who will all fight very vigorously for the job. I think it's going to be a close battle."

Pendergast was the head coach at Hamilton College during the 2000 season and prior to his appointment at Hamilton, he was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Memphis from 1997 to 1999.

In his first two seasons at Memphis, he served as the secondary coach, then switched to wide receivers in 1999. Pendergast was defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator at James Madison from 1993 to 1996. He was the secondary coach at Maine from 1992-93, after coaching the wide receivers at Northwestern from 1990 to 1992. He began his coaching career in 1980 as a graduate assistant at Ithaca College.

Pendergast was appointed to the Cornell staff as the secondary coach in 1983 after serving as head freshman coach in 1982 and as a graduate assistant in 1981. Pendergast was named the Big Red's recruiting coordinator in 1989.

A 1980 graduate of State University of New York at Cortland, Pendergast received a bachelor of science degree in physical education and earned his master's degree in physical education from Ithaca College in 1986.

Pendergast, a three-year starter as a defensive back at Cortland, was awarded the T. Fred Holloway Award, presented annually to the senior physical education major who is the top student-athlete.

He had participated in football, basketball, track and lacrosse at Bishop Grimes High School in Syracuse, N.Y.

Pendergast and his wife, Leslie, have two children, Greg, 9, and Taylor, 6.
