Dartmouth Head Coach John Lyons (Pennsylvania, 1974) 51-47-1 (11th season with the Big Green) |
|
 |
|
As Lyons heads into his 11th season at Dartmouth, he has tallied 36 league victories in his tenure. He needs just one more Ivy League win to pass Joe Yukica (36, 1978-86) on the all-time league victories list and is ahead of all other Big Green coaches since Bob Blackman (79, 1956-70).
Lyons has won two outright Ivy championships during his tenure. The 1992 team established seven team and 15 individual school records on its way to an 8-2 overall record and 6-1 in Ivy play behind QB Jay Fiedler, an NFL playoff starter at Miami.
The 1996 title squad had Dartmouth’s first undefeated record since 1970 and only the fifth in the school’s illustrious football history. The ‘96 squad did it in style, outscoring its Ivy opponents by nearly 18 points a game.

John Lyons gives us the skinny
on the 2002 Season.
Lyons On...
...his quarterback Brian
Mann
"This coming season Brian Mann
is coming back for his 5th year. He really played very well
for us this spring. He threw the ball extremely well. It
appeared he had a lot more zip on the ball than he had and
I'm not sure what the correlation is with breaking your hand
and throwing the ball harder but that's what has happened."
Lyons On...
...special
teams
"I think one of the strengths of
our team last year was some of the individuals in our
kicking game. Alex Ware returns as a two-time all-Ivy
punter. He also kicks off for us and he's very good at both
those things. He's got a great leg and hopefully he'll
continue what he has done, this year. We also have Tyler
Lavin, who was our placekicker and he was a freshman last
year that came in and beat out a fellow who was a senior. We
are very fortunate to this year in recruiting to land the
USA Today First Team Placekicker, Erik Hinterbichler from
New Mexico. So we will have to see how he does coming in but
he certainly has a lot of credentials in high school. Then
we have Steve Jensen who was the Ivy League Rookie of the
Year and led the League in kickoff returns and also Jay
Barnard who was one of our receivers and led the League in
punt returns. So hopefully those guys continue to improve
and we can have our special teams be a big part of getting
this thing turned around."

That wasn’t the first time Lyons was associated with a dominant undefeated Ivy championship team. As a defensive coordinator at his alma mater — the University of Pennsylvania — the 1984 team went 7-0 in League play, outscoring its opponents by 23 points per game.
From Penn Lyons became the defensive coordinator at Boston University, making the Terrier defense among the most-feared in the Yankee Conference.
Lyons moved from BU to Hanover in 1988, helping Buddy Teevens build the Green into an Ivy juggernaut which would win three straight Ivy titles. That is the only Ivy three-peat since Lyons helped guide the Penn Quakers to five straight titles (1982-86).
Lyons had been a three-year letterwinner at Pennsylvania and a second-team All-Ivy defensive back. The Quakers had a winning conference record in each of his three seasons.
He had lettered in football, basketball and baseball at Northwest Catholic High School (Conn.) while earning All-State and All-County honors. Lyons now resides in Wilder, Vermont, with his wife, Nancy, and their four daughters — Kate, Kristen, Kelly and Kyle.
