Memorial Field, originally built in 1893, was later dedicated in 1923. It consists of a 30,000-square-foot stadium that has a football field and track. Memorial Field was revamped to honor some 3,407 Dartmouth men who served in World War I, including 112 who lost their lives during battle.
Since that time, Memorial Field has continued to undergo reconstruction. With the construction of a permanent east grandstand in 1968 and with the erection of temporary bleachers beyond each end zone, Memorial Field ballooned its seating capacity to more than 20,000. The largest crowd ever to see a football game in the stadium was 21,530 (versus Harvard in 1974).
In 2006, renovations to the stadium will cut the seating capacity from 20,416 to 13,000 to make room for the new Varsity House. Construction has also started on the new Varsity House, which will replace the Davis Varsity House. With 10,000 square feet of space, the new Varsity House will accommodate locker facilities, a strength-training center, video rooms and offices for the football staff.
In addition, the installation of field turf, a durable synthetic infill turf that will make the field available for year-round use, will replace the natural grass field.
