Columbia Head Coach Bob Shoop (Yale, 1987)
4-6 (second season with the Lions)
Untitled Document
In his first season with the Lions, Bob Shoop turned Columbia from a pretender (1-9 in 2002) to a legitimate contender in future seasons (4-6 in 2003). The former Yale wide receiver has been mentored by some of the top coaches in collegiate football and has been a part of several significant turnaround efforts.

As the defensive secondary coach at Boston College for four years prior to his arrival in New York, Shoop played a major role in the Eagles' recent success, including a bowl victory in each of his last four seasons. Shoop's secondary was a key cog in BC's 9-4 record and Motor City Bowl Championship in 2002. The Eagles ranked 13th in the nation in passing defense and 17th in pass efficiency defense.

Shoop boasts significant Ivy League experience as an assistant coach at Yale (1989 and 1994-96) under legendary Hall of Fame coach Carmen Cozza. The Light Blue mentor also has served stints as an assistant coach at Army (1998), Villanova, where he was defensive coordinator for the 12-1 1997 squad, and Northeastern (1991-93). Shoop served as a graduate assistant (1990) under Virginia's George Welsh, the ACC's all-time winningest coach. Shoop's defenses have been among the nation's leaders statistically. At Boston College, he contributed to defenses that were ranked twice in the top 10. Ten times the Eagle defense earned top 25 rankings. At Yale, Shoop's defenses led the Ivy League in pass defense and completion rate while he served as defensive coordinator.

Shoop also brings experience as an Ivy League student-athlete to the Lions' locker room. As a former wide receiver at Yale, he earned honorable mention All-Ivy accolades in 1987. He was recognized with Yale Football's prestigious Robert Gardner Anderson Memorial Award for team spirit, dedication and leadership. Shoop also captained the Bulldog baseball team for which he earned four letters. He twice earned the Ducky Pond Award as the team's most outstanding pitcher.

The 36-year-old Shoop hails from Oakmont, Pa., a suburb of Pittsburgh. He and his wife, Maura, have two children, Tyler and Jay. His brother John is the offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears.
