The Ivy League & Hobey Baker

The Hobey Baker Award came to be in 1981, through the efforts of Minnesota’s Decathlon Club, the original sponsors of the award, and the Hobey Baker Committee. The Hobey Baker Award now resides at the XCel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn., home of the NHL's Minnesota Wild. The Award is controlled by a non-profit group known as the Hobey Baker Foundation.

There could not have been a greater hero to name the award after than Baker, who rose to prominence at Princeton University in the 1910s. He captained Princeton's hockey and football teams and became a Tiger Hall of Famer in both sports. He was also a charter member of the United States Hockey Hall of Fame and one of a handful of Americans to be inducted into Canada's Hockey Hall of Fame.

He enlisted as a pilot in World War I and shot down three German planes in dogfights so gloriously depicted in the movies "Hells Angels" and "Dawn Patrol." After surviving the war and preparing to return to the States for a hero’s welcome, Baker was killed while testing a repaired aircraft. He was only 26.

The idea for the Hobey Baker Award originated from an idea by Chuck Bard, then CEO and General Manager of the Decathlon Club. With the help of the membership, as well as the business and hockey community in Bloomington, the Decathlon Club was able to unveil the first Hobey Baker Award in 1981, when it was awarded to Minnesota Golden Gopher standout, Neal Broten.

Since its inception, the award has become recognized as college hockey's premier individual honor. Candidates must exhibit strength of character both on and off the ice; contribute to the integrity of the team and display outstanding skills in all phases of the game; should be given to scholastic achievement and sportmanship; and comply with all NCAA rules, be full time students in an accredited NCAA or NAIA college or university, and complete 50 percent or more of the season.
