The Ivy League's Olympic history began prior to the first modern Games in 1896, as Princeton professor William Milligan Sloane played a large part in the effort to revive the ancient Greek Games. Ivy Leaguers outside of the United States caught on to the Olympic phenomenon soon after as Dr. George W. Orton (Penn '94) of Canada won a gold medal at the 1900 Paris Games where Penn track dominated the competition.

Counting Orton, 95 Leaguers have competed in the Olympics for countries other than the United States -- a figure that is approximately 12 percent of the Ivy League's total. Canada accounts for the most -- 33 athletes. Included in this list are a wealth of ice hockey players, including NHL star Joe Nieuwendyk (Cornell '88) and several from the second-place women's team in 1998 and first-place women's team in 2002.

The rest of the group is spread throughout 31 nations -- from Argentina to Yugoslavia. Great Britain and Australia both tie for a distant second-place with six athletes each.
