Some may forget that the most-hyped and most-watched Final Four of all-time included an Ivy League team and that the best game of the Final Four was the national consolation. The Ivy entrant was the Penn Quakers, led by Tony Price. The Red and Blue first marched through Raleigh, knocking off the Tar Heels of North Carolina before a home crowd. From Raleigh, it was Greensboro, where the Quakers ended the seasons of Syracuse and St. John’s. Then came the improbable trip to the Final Four in Salt Lake City. As the basketball world anticipated a Larry Bird-Magic Johnson final, the Michigan State Spartans made quick work of Penn, taking a 51-17 halftime lead. Before the Bird-Magic game, Pennsylvania mounted an amazing comeback to take Mark Aguirre-led DePaul into overtime in the consolation.
