Former Yale Fencer Andera Metkus...

Andrea Metkus was an instrumental figure in the rise to national prominence of Ivy League women's fencing. She led Yale to a back-to-back NCAA national championships 1984 and 1985, and won the AIAW individual championship in 1982. She also finished second (to fellow Ivy Leaguer Mary Jane O'Neill) in the 1984 NCAA individual competition. She also led Yale to the 1982 Ivy League title, NIFWA championship, the EAIAW championship, the New England Tournament, and the AIAW national championship. The AIAW victory was Yale's first national team championship since its men's swimming and diving team had own the NCAA title in 1953. Metkus was also honored with the Broderick Award, which is given annually to the top national performer in fencing.

After her graduation from Yale, Metkus went on to the University of Chicago Medical School. She is currently a surgeon at the Univeristy of California-San Francisco Department of Surgery.
