In the following pages there is a lot of text, twenty
interviews in total. Ten of the interviews are with former
Ivy League athletes who have now joined the coaching ranks.
These interviews, which appear on the left feature stories
like that of Sue Bower. Sue is the women's golf coach at
Tulane, one of the best programs in the country. She
enrolled at Dartmouth the same year that the women's golf
program started in Hanover. She credits competition in the
Ivy League as the
reason why she became a professional golfer and later a
collegiate golf coach.
On the right side of the page you will find 10
corresponding interviews. These were conducted with ten
current Ivy League athletes in the same sports as the
coaches. Sue Bower, the Dartmouth grad and Tulane head
coach, pairs up with current Dartmouth student-athlete Anne
Daher. There are many great stories to be told in the
students' section as well. How about Penn senior rower
Catherine Hunt who had to be ready every high school morning
by the time the 4:30
am carpool arrived so that she could make it to practice
and back before school?
This celebration of women in athletics does not come without a few points of debate. Where is women's athletics headed in the future? Has it hit a glass ceiling in its development? Will it continue to grow into even more professional teams? Has the quality of play caught up to quantity of opportunities available? Many of the coaches point to specialization in one sport as a major concern. While the students' opinions vary on issues like the Ivy League's seven-week rule (Robinson, Mansur). You'll have to read on to decide for yourself.
I would finally like to help the many people that helped to put this project together and those who came before and laid the groundwork for this celebration. Those people include: Mary Mulvenna, Eddy Lentz, Brett Hoover, LaKesha Whitaker, Nathan Fry, Jennifer Duda and the staffs of Sports Information Office around the League and the country. Photo credits include Stockton Photo and Stephen Slade. Lastly, I would like to recognize those responsible for producing the Ivy League's 25th anniversary of women's athletics book, Silver Era, Golden Moments.
