Many Ivy League institutions have
their own celebrations for National Girls and Women in
Sports Day, including special promotions and free admission
to weekend contests. Following is a list of schools that
will, celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
BROWN
Brown will be trying to "Blitz thePizz" on Mar.
8 during a women's basketball game against Harvard. We
will try to break our all-time attendance record for women's
basketball of 1,832. Girl Scouts of Rhode Island, various
schools and organizations will be invited to attend the
event. Various prizes will be given away from our sponsors.
COLUMBIA
In honor of its female athletes, Columbia will host
a dinner on Feb.6 in LeFrak Gymnasium on Barnard's
campus. Marcia Sells will be the guest speaker. Barnard
president Judith Shapiro will be attendance, as will
athletic director John Reeves and coaches. On Feb. 7,
the 2002 Heptagonal Champion women's cross country team will
be honored at halftime of the men's basketball game against
Princeton. Also, the Greenwich Village Girls' Basketball
League will compete at halftime of home a basketball game on
Feb. 14, and on Feb. 15, we will be
recognizing All-Ivy honorees for all sports at halftime of a
Columbia/Dartmouth women's basketball game.
DARTMOUTH
Dartmouth hosted a variety of events for youth teams
to attend Jan 31-Feb 2. All ticketed events such as
the Penn/Dartmouth women's basktetball and Yale/Dartmouth
women's hockey games (Jan.31) as well as the
Princeton/Dartmouth basketball game (Feb. 2) were free for
teams and pronotional give-aways such as T-shirts and
posters were awarded. For all non-ticketed events (women's
swimming, track and squash), the coaching staffs arranged
receptions for the athletes and youth teams in
attendance.
HARVARD
In recognition of National Girls and Women in Sports
Day, the Harvard-Radcliffe Foundation for Women's Athletics
(HRFWA) and the Harvard Department of Athletics are
sponsoring a sports clinic Feb. 8 for middle-school
girls from the Boston area. The clinics, to be taught by
dozens of Harvard athletes and coaches, will feature
instruction in volleyball, basketball, and water polo, and
also include indoor field hockey and soccer games. The
program runs from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at Harvard's Malkin
Athletic Center (39 Holyoke Street) in Cambridge.Sessions
run for approximately 30 minutes, where the young women will
learn the basic skills of each sport. Following the clinics,
there will be a lunch and a question and answer session with
the athletes. Participants will also be given complimentary
tickets to attend that day's home women's ice hockey game
featuring the top-ranked Crimson against Vermont (4 p.m. at
the Bright Hockey Center) and/or the women's basketball game
vs. Yale (6 p.m. at Lavietes Pavilion).
PRINCETON
Princeton's female varsity athletes will host
interactive stations on Feb. 8 beginning at 5:15 pm in Jadwin Gym.
Each team is responsible for designing, setting up and
implementing an interactive stations where attendees can
learn a skill for their sport. The interactive fair is
followed by the women's basketball game against Cornell at
7:00 pm. The pre-game speaker will be Heather Deerin, a
four-time All-Ivy soccer alumna. The Tigers have partnered
with the Delaware- Raritan Girl Scouts and who usually
brings about 800 members. Last year's total attendance last
year was around 3,000. LUNA Bar who will be providing free
bar samples, t-shirts and promotional items.
