Benjie
Lewis (Dartmouth '05) will be competing on the menıs sprint kayaking
team in Athens. The Aventura, Fla., native took to the water at the age
of 13 when he attended a sports camp designed to promote the sport. In 2003
Lewis won five gold medals at the National Championships and picked up two
silvers and a bronze at the U.S. Team trials. This year his best finish
was seventh in the K-4, 1,000-meter race at the third World Cup meet in
Racice, Czech Republic. There are 11 members on the flatwater team, of which
Lewis is a part of, heading to Athens. Lewis wasnıt added to the team until
early July when the U.S. team was invited to the K-2 500-meter race by the
International Canoe Federation, It was an event in which the U.S. had not
previously qualified. Two others, along with Lewis were added on July 11.

Matthew
Taylor (Yale '92) teamed with partner Joe Jacobi to win the U.S. Olympic
Trials in the C-2 whitewater event in April. Taylor and Jacobi earned a
No. 9 ranking in the world after a ninth-place finish at the 2003 World
Championships. This will be his second Olympic appearance for Taylor, who
teamed with Lecky Haller for a 12th-place finish in 2000. Yale won't be
the only school cheering for Taylor, who teaches sixth grade at the Galloway
School in Atlanta. His mode of transportation to his training site this
summer? A 1989 Volvo with a stuck odometer showing 169,000 miles.
