Celebrating The Dream: The Ivy League Celebrates Black History Month

PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Ivy League celebrated Black History Month 2011 with a month-long, video series on IvyLeagueSports.com entitled Celebrating The Dream.

Featuring a new video each week day during the month of February, the series was a collection of video interviews by Ivy League student-athletes, coaches and administrators reflecting on the significance of Black History Month, the impact of individuals on their lives from family members to historic figures and this year’s recognition of the 25th anniversary of Martin Luther King Day.

Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. The event grew out of Negro History Week, the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans in 1926. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating black history.
