PRINCETON, N.J. -- The United States men’s soccer national team survived the Group of Death and advanced to the World Cup Round of 16 despite a 1-0 loss to Germany in its final matchup of group play. Before, during and after the game, Ivies everywhere took to twitter to talk US Soccer.
Despite Team USA's loss to Germany, they were able to move on to the next round thanks to Portugal's 2-1 win over Ghaha. Germany won the group with seven points, while the US and Portugal finished tied for second with four points apiece. The Americans advanced thanks to a better goal differential.
On Thursday, with the US trailing Germany, 1-0 and Portugal and Ghana tied at one apiece, Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo scored in the 80th minute to put his team ahead for good, 2-1, clinching a spot in the next round for the Americans.

We didn't advance despite a loss. We advanced because we had a 1-1-1 record and a 0 GD. Well earned, @ussoccer— Andy Glockner (@AndyGlockner) June 26, 2014
That wasn't pretty but it got the job done #GoUSMNT— Russell D. (@DancingDinks) June 26, 2014
