2014 Winter Olympics Central | #IviesinSochi Coverage

PRINCETON, N.J. -- With Opening Ceremonies of the 2014 Winter Olympics drawing near, plenty of current and former Ivies will be in representing the League in Sochi, Russia, including 24 participants, one coach and two delegates.

One of those Ivies was asked to represent the United States by none other than President Barack Obama, who selected former Harvard and Team USA women's ice hockey standout Caitlin Cahow to serve as a member of the Presidential Delegation to the Closing Ceremony of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games. Cahow was a silver medalist in the 2010 Games and also boasts a bronze medal from the 2006 Games.

Another Crimson women's hockey star Angela Ruggiero, a four-time ice hockey medalist, will be serving in her role with the International Olympic Committee for the first time as vice chair of the athletes' commission. Ruggiero won gold in 1998, silver in 2002 and 2010 and bronze in 2006 as a member of the U.S. squad.

The bulk of the competitors will hit the ice in women's hockey, as 10 current and former Ivy League student-athletes will represent three countries. In addition, Harvard women's ice hockey head coach Katey Stone will assume the same responsibilities for Team USA.

Stone will have three familiar faces on her squad, as current Crimson Lyndsey Fry, Michelle Picard and Josephine Pucci and former standout Julie Chu will all be donning the red, white and blue throughout the Games. Yale freshman Phoebe Staenz will suit up for Switzerland, while Cornell senior Brianne Jenner will play for Canada. Jenner will be joined on the Canadian squad by former Big Red Rebecca Jonston, Laura Fortino and Lauriane Rougeau, as well as former Dartmouth standout Gillian Apps.

Also highlighted is Big Green junior Hannah Kearney, who will look to defend her 2010 Olympic gold medal in Freestyle Mogul Skiing. This will be Kearney’s third appearance in the Winter Olympic Games.

Ivy League eyes will also be focused on Alpine Skiing as four current and former Dartmouth student-athletes will take the hill. Three will represent Team USA while Trace Cummings Smith will compete for Estonia.

In total, 12 Dartmouth current and former student-athletes will compete in the Games, including three in the biathlon and cross-country skiing.

Jamie Greubel and Chris Langton head to Sochi to represent Cornell. Both are former Big Red student-athletes and will represent Team USA in the Bobsled. Greubel was a member of the track & field team, while Langton played men's lacrosse.

Rounding out the Ivy League Olympians is Brown's Dow Travers. At the 2010 Winter Games, Travers became the first participant for the Cayman Islands, a country he will proudly represent again in Sochi.
