NRDC Report: Game Changer: How the Sports Industry Is Saving the Environment

The Ivy League has partnered with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), the principal environmental advisor to all U.S. professional sports leagues, to make a commitment to environmental stewardship. The League is working with the NRDC to enhance the environmental profile of Ivy League Championship events and to provide greening resources to all Ivy League athletics departments to help improve the environmental footprint of their operations and supply chains.

"The Ivy League has made a landmark pledge in the name of environmental protection. The League's commitment to reduce its ecological impact and to help educate their communities about the importance of environmental stewardship will help conserve precious natural resources and protect public health," said Alice Henly, NRDC Collegiate Sports Project Coordinator.

The games we love today were born outdoors, and without clean air, clean water and a healthy climate, our enjoyment of most sports would not be possible. Promoting environmental stewardship and ecologically responsible business practices helps benefit all aspects of society—water resources, energy supply, transportation, agriculture, ecosystems, and jobs, and offers unique opportunities to protect human health. The Ivy League, alongside many professional teams and leagues, is greening the operations of our championship events because we recognize the importance of working towards a sustainable economy to protect our planet for future generations and the future of sports.

Through our environmental leadership on the field, court or rink, we are showing our many fans and communities practical, cost-effective solutions to some of our planet's most pressing ecological issues. Our greening efforts will also help prove the business case for greening collegiate athletics operations and outreach, from achieving resource and cost savings to attracting new sponsors, strengthening community ties and developing new donor opportunities.

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is an international nonprofit environmental organization with more than 1.3 million members and online activists. Since 2004, NRDC has been the world’s leader in professional and collegiate sports greening. NRDC uses scientific expertise to help improve the efficiency of sports operations to reduce waste, improve environmental performance, benefit public health and uncover cost savings.

NRDC is the principal environmental advisor to all major North American professional leagues, including Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association, the National Hockey League, Major League Soccer, the National Football League, the US Tennis Association, and over 100 professional sports teams. As a result of NRDC's work and EPA award-winning Greening Advisor, sports venues have saved millions of dollars, while helping the U.S. sports industry shift to more ecologically productive, efficient, and healthy operations.
