There are a wide variety of topics in this, the first Ivy Newsletter of 2003. You can read about Academy Award winner Tommy Lee Jones being honored by the Ivy Football Association. Or catch up on Carl Morris, who will be catching passes from Heisman finalists Brad Banks and Ken Dorsey this week at the East-West Shrine game in San Francisco.

You can read all about Ivy basketball and hockey as players break school records and get off to quick starts. Or former Brown Bear Cory Gibbs making the U.S. National Men's Soccer Squad. You can even take in every NCAA National Champion from the Ivy League -- all 84 teams and 361 individuals who have earned the rare distinction as the NCAA's best.

But this portion of the Ivy Newsletter will focus on stories that should make you smile.

When former Penn baseballer Doug Glanville signed with the Texas Rangers recently he did something that came as a surprise even to sports reporters. Wrote Trenton Times' staff writer Chris Edwards, "(Glanville) again demonstrated that class and dignity have no price tag. On Friday, he requested cell phone numbers for several of the Phillies' beat writers from the team's public-relations staff. One by one, he called to thank each of them and wish them well. Rest assured, the appreciation was mutual. Glanville is a supreme pleasure to deal with."

Glanville isn't the only Ivy Leaguer in the majors switching clubs in the off-season. Dartmouth graduate and former Atlanta Braves reliever Mike Remlinger is off to the Windy City, joining the Chicago Cubs.

Yale's Amanda Walton will be presented with the NCAA's Inspiration Award at the NCAA Convention in Anaheim, Calif., on Sunday. The award was designed to be given to an athlete when confronted with a life-altering situation, used perseverance, dedication and determination to overcome the event, and now serves as a role model to give hope and inspiration to others in similar situations.

After her sophomore year at Yale, Walton, who was a field hockey and women's lacrosse star for the Elis and would have graduated last spring, miraculously survived a near fatal automobile accident after a speeding vehicle, whose occupant was fleeing police, demolished her car. Walton suffered brain trauma, massive internal injuries and fractured bones in the accident, and was left in a coma for more than a month.

Despite the accident, Walton returned to the Yale sidelines as a volunteer assistant coach for field hockey. A native of Chestnut Hill, Mass., she serves as a mentor and inspiration to the women's field hockey team and the community around her. Last year, the Yale Athletics Department established the Amanda D. Walton Award, which is presented to an outstanding athlete who has excelled on the field of play and who has shown spirit and courage in transcending unforeseen challenges.
