ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Former Columbia All-Ivy League outfielder Fernando Perez '04CC is among four players the Tampa Bay Rays have recalled from Triple-A Durham on Tuesday.

Along with pitchers Andy Sonnanstine and Jeff Bennett and catcher Shawn Riggans, Perez will join the Rays before they welcome Boston for a three-game series beginning Tuesday night.

After debuting with Tampa Bay last September and making an impact during the Rays' run to the World Series in October, Perez was slated for a spot on Tampa Bay's 2009 25-man roster but a spring training injury sidelined the former Lion until August, when he began a rehabilitation assignment in the Tampa Bay farm system.

"Perez brings a lot to us," Rays manager Joe Maddon said on Sunday. "Besides his bat, his ability to pinch-run is big. And last year, I think, he really came on as a baserunner. He got more aggressive and got better at stealing bases when they know he's going to try and steal a base. And that's a good thing. He's become a better baseball player."

After just splitting a four-game series in Detroit, the Rays will begin their series with the Red Sox five games behind Boston in the AL Wild Card race.
