PRINCETON, N.J. -- Six of the eight Ivy League
teams were in action last week, all on the road. Cornell and Penn
led the way with three wins apiece, as the Big Red played a
four-game set at George Washington and Penn competed in the
RussMatt Invitational in Winter Haven, Fla.
Cornell took three out of four against the Colonials, outscoring
its opponent 26-12 over the course of the series. After taking the
first two, 6-3 and 5-3, the Big Red fell in the third game, 4-3.
But Cornell bounced back to clinch the series with a 12-3 victory
in game four.
Penn opened the RussMatt Invitational with a pair of victories,
13-2 over Bowling Green and 3-2 over Northeastern. After an 11-4
loss to Western Michigan, the Quakers defeated Fairfield, 7-3,
before falling to North Dakota State in their final contest,
15-3.
Princeton took No. 3 South Carolina to task in Columbia, S.C., as
the Gamecocks won the series by scores of 2-1, 6-1 and 3-1. Yale
joined Penn in the RussMatt Invitational, going 2-2-1 with wins
against Georgetown, 3-2, and Bowling Green, 11-9, to pick up its
first victories of the season. Columbia competed in the Jack
Gifford Memorial Tournament in San Jose, Calif., finishing 1-3 with
a win over Lehigh, 14-2. Harvard played a three-game set at Stetson
and won the finale, 5-1.
Player of the Week
Yale sophomore Kevin Fortunato (Wall, N.J.) was
not content with a good week at the plate, so he added two
successful outings on the mound as well. Fortunato batted .450 in
five games (9-for-20) and saved both of Yale's victories on the
week. For his efforts, he was named Ivy League Player of the
Week.
Fortunato recorded three multi-hit games and recorded at least one
hit in all five contests. He finished with three runs and four RBI
and hit three doubles. His best game came in Yale's 11-9 win over
Bowling Green, when he hit 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, a run and
two RBI. He also had a pair of scoreless outings while recording
saves in each of the Bulldogs' two victories, while notching a
strikeout against Bowling Green. The award is the first for the
sophomore, who was named second-team All-Ivy as a freshman.

Pitcher of the Week
Penn senior righthander Vince Voiro (Cherry Hill,
N.J.) pitched nine innings in the Quakers' 3-2 win over
Northeastern for his first victory of the season en route to being
named Ivy League Pitcher of the Week. Voiro did not allow a hit
until the fourth inning and no runners reached scoring position
until the seventh. He struck out seven batters and induced a
game-ending double-play in the ninth.
Voiro had thrown 10 complete games before his performance against
Northeastern, but that game was his first complete game in a
nine-inning contest. The award is the first of his career.
