Baseball Weekly Release - Week 3
Ivy League Baseball Statistics in pdf format
PRINCETON, N.J. -- Last week’s Ivy League
baseball action opened with a two-game set between Penn and Duke,
and closed with a three-game series between Columbia and No. 16
Arizona. The Lions and Quakers acquitted themselves well, giving
Cornell notice that a return trip to the top of the Lou Gehrig
Division will be anything but easy.
Penn (4-5) went 3-2 on the week, including a split at Duke. The
Quakers won the first game, 6-0, before falling in the second, 8-1.
Penn then took two of three at Winthrop, scoring 15 runs in the
process.
Columbia (1-6), meanwhile, took its talents to Tucson, Ariz., to
face the 16th-ranked and defending champion Arizona Wildcats. In
the first game, the Lions took a 3-0 lead with two runs in the
seventh, but were unable to hold on, as Arizona scored three in the
eighth and walked off with an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth
to win, 4-3. Columbia was far from demoralized, however, as it came
back from a 4-1 deficit in the next contest with two in the sixth
and five in the seventh en route to an 8-4 victory, its first of
the season, and its first-ever against a defending national
champion. Although Arizona won the rubber game, 7-5, Columbia came
away with a shot of confidence.
Cornell (4-4), the defending Lou Gehrig Division and the Ivy
League Champion, dropped three of four at George Washington, with
each game decided by two or fewer runs. The Big Red lost the first
three contests, 4-3, 5-3 and 1-0, before bouncing back to win the
finale, 7-5.
Brown (1-6), Harvard (1-6) and Yale (0-3) each suffered three
defeats last week, as the Bears were swept at Auburn, the Crimson
lost to Ohio State, Coastal Carolina and Ball State and the
Bulldogs opened their season with a three-game sweep at the hands
of Army in Tampa, Fla.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Penn sophomore catcher Austin Bossart
(O’Fallon, Ill.) was a key part of his team’s 3-2 week,
batting .350 (7-for-20) with four runs, three doubles and one
triple. He recorded at least one hit and one run in each of the
Quakers’ final four games of the week, including a pair of
multi-hit games. He finished a home run shy of the cycle in an 8-1
loss at Duke, going 3-for-3 with a run, a double and a triple. He
then batted 2-for-5 with a double, a run and a stolen base in a 7-0
win at Winthrop. For the week, Bossart swiped three bags.
Bossart earns his first Ivy League Player of the Week award after
receiving Honor Roll status twice as a freshman.

CO-PITCHERS OF THE WEEK
Columbia junior reliever Joey Donino (Avon,
Conn.) helped his team to its first win of the season, giving up
just one hit and no runs over two innings of work in the
Lions’ 8-4 win over No. 16 Arizona. Donino came on in the
sixth after the Wildcats had taken a 4-1 lead with four in the
fifth, and held the defending national champions down while his
teammates rallied with two runs in the sixth and five in the
seventh en route to the win. Donino also came out of the pen with
two on and nobody out in the eighth inning of the rubber match with
Arizona, getting two outs with one strikeout to help his team get
out of the inning.
Donino is the first Columbia reliever to be named Pitcher of the
Week since Chris Kotes, who was both a reliever
and a starter for the Lions, received the award on March 26,
1990.

Penn sophomore Dan Gautieri (Roseland, N.J.) did
not give anyone in the Quakers bullpen a chance to enter the game
he started, scattering eight hits around nine innings of work in a
7-0 win over Winthrop. It marked the first career complete game for
Donino, who never let a runner get past second base while holding
the Eagles hitless in five at bats with runners in scoring
position. With the win, he improved to 2-0 on the year and saw his
ERA fall to 1.23.
Gautieri takes home his first career Ivy League weekly award after
earning Honor Roll once as a freshman.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Penn pitcher Pat Bet (Whitehall, Pa.) is not your
ordinary rookie, as the junior is seeing his first career
collegiate action. After coming out of the pen for his first
appearance in a college baseball game at William & Mary on
March 1, Bet made his first career start against Duke. He was not
fazed by the situation, limiting the Blue Devils to two hits and no
runs over six innings of work while striking out two.
Bet set down 10-consecutive Duke batters at one point and left the
game with a 3-0 lead en route to his first career victory.
