PRINCETON, N.J. -- The 2012 Ivy League football schedule rolls on with a Week 3 schedule highlighted by Penn at Dartmouth in a key Ancient Eight clash on the NBC Sports Network.
Both teams come into the matchup on different ends of streaks as the 2-0 Big Green has won its last five in a row, while the 0-2 Quakers have come up short in their last four games dating back to last season. Randy Moss (play-by-play), Ross Tucker (analyst) and Carolyn Manno (sidelines) will once again serve as the broadcast team.
Princeton and Columbia meet in the Big Apple as the two look to rebound from tough Week 2 losses. Harvard hopes to keep its winning ways going in its version of Friday Night Lights, hosting Holy Cross, the last team to beat the Crimson in two seasons. A couple of series are renewed Saturday with Yale facing Colgate for the first time since 2004 and Brown headingto the Nation's Capital to take on Georgetown for the first time since 2006. Capping the weekend's games is the Battle of the 'Nells under the lights as Cornell hits the road to take on Bucknell for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Cornell junior quarterback Jeff Mathews
(Camarillo, Calif.) was again spectacular, completing 29-of-39
passes for 340 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions, in
the Big Red's Ivy League opener, a 45-6 win over Yale. Mathews
posted his fourth straight 300-yard passing game and eighth in his
career, matching a school record. Cornell scored touchdowns on five
of its first eight possessions and rolled up 286 yards of offense
in the first half in running out to a 35-0 lead by halftime.
Harvard senior running back Treavor Scales (Stone Mountain, Ga.) scored a career-high four touchdowns, including three in the second half, en route to 136 rushing yards and leading the Crimson to a 45-31 road win at Brown. Scales leads the nation with 18.0 points per game and is fourth in rushing at better than 8.4 yards per carry. His performance put him into a tie for fifth place on Harvard's all-time rushing list (2,130) with the legendary Vic Gato (1966-68).
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Dartmouth junior linebacker Michael Runger
(Lisle, Ill.) spearheaded a Big Green defensive effort that held
Holy Cross to 199 yards of offense and just 10 points. Runger
racked up a career-high 15 tackles, nine solo, while no other
teammate had more than six stops on the afternoon. The 15 tackles
are the most by a Dartmouth player since the 2009 season
opener.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Dartmouth sophomore placekicker/punter Riley
Lyons (Roswell, Ga.) came through with a 31-yard field
goal in the final seconds with the game on the line to lift the Big
Green to a 13-10 victory at Holy Cross. Earlier in the game, Lyons
converted his first collegiate field goal, a 34-yarder, to knot the
score at 10 after Dartmouth had fallen behind by 10 in the first
quarter. Right after tying the game, his kickoff was returned 69
yards and would have gone for a touchdown had Lyons not been there
to bring the Crusader to the turf. That tackle preserved the tie
and allowed him to provide the late-game heroics. Doubling as the
team's punter, Lyons booted seven punts for a 36.4-yard average,
including two inside the 20-yard line and a 57-yarder on the
fly.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Cornell freshman running back Luke Hagy
(Pittsburgh) had a breakout performance in his first extended
action, compiling 157 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns in
helping the Big Red knock off Yale. Hagy looked like a veteran with
21 carries for 88 yards on the ground to lead the Big Red rushing
attack. He had 81 rushing yards by halftime and added 69 receiving
yards on five catches.
