Nine Former Football Ivies Open NFL Season on Active Rosters
PRINCETON, N.J. -- The 2013-14 National Football League season kicks off with nine former Ivy Leaguers on active rosters and three others earning spots on practice squads.
NFL veterans among the former Ancient Eight gridiron greats include Harvard's Ryan Fitzpatrick (ninth season, first season with the Tennessee Titans), Cornell's Kevin Boothe (eighth season, seventh with the New York Giants), Brown's Zak DeOssie (seventh season, all with the Giants), Harvard's Desmond Bryant (fifth season, first with the Cleveland Browns) and Brown's James Develin (fourth season, second with the New England Patriots).
Penn's Greg Van Roten enters his second season with the Green Bay Packers. Last season, Van Roten spent the first five weeks on the Packers' practice squad and was promoted to the active roster on Oct. 13, serving as a backup and special teams player.
Princeton's Mike Catapano, the 2012 Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year, enters his rookie campaign on the active roster of the Kansas City Chiefs. Fellow first-year pros Columbia's Josh Martin with the Chiefs and Harvard's Kyle Juszczyk with the Baltimore Ravens open the season looking to contribute for their respective teams.
Cornell's JC Tretter begins his NFL career on the Packers' Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) List after breaking his ankle during spring practice in May. In April, Tretter and Juszczyk were selected in the fourth round and Catapano was chosen in the seventh round of the the NFL Draft.
Former Big Red standout Bryan Walters is one of three Ivies starting the year on practice squads as he remains with the Seattle Seahawks for a second season. Walters spent two seasons with the San Diego Chargers and a brief stint with the Minnesota Vikings before signing a futures contract with the Seahawks. Harvard's Kevin Murphy is one of eight players on the Vikings' practice squad. Murphy entered the NFL last season as an undrafted free agent with the San Francisco 49ers. Former Quaker defensive star Brandon Copeland has a spot on the Ravens' practice squad after a stellar career in Philadelphia and an impressive preseason with the defending Super Bowl champions.
Former Ivy Leaguers released in training camps were Columbia's Jeff Adams (by the Miami Dolphins), Brown's Colin Cloherty (by the Atlanta Falcons), Princeton's Andrew Starks (by the Chicago Bears) and Cornell's Luke Tasker (by the Chargers).
