Record 14 #IvyFootball Alums Appear on NFL Active Rosters

PRINCETON, N.J. -- The number of Ivy League football alums in the NFL has risen each of the past three years, including a record 14 on active rosters at the start of the 2016-17 season.

In total, twenty Ivies have worked their way onto NFL teams. The 14 active #IvyFootball alums on NFL rosters is the most in League history, surpassing the previous mark of 13 in 2006. Fully half of NFL teams have at least one Ivy on their roster, with seven of the Ancient Eight represented in the big show.

Harvard leads the way with nine former Crimson in the NFL, including five on active rosters. Ryan Fitzpatrick is the Jets starting quarterback and Kyle Juszczyk returns as an h-back for the Baltimore Ravens.

Princeton follows with three players on NFL rosters, including rookie tight end Seth DeValve, a fourth-round draft pick of the Browns. Two former Tigers defensive lineman will also suit up on Sundays, Mike Catapano with the Jets and Caraun Reid with the Chargers.

Brown boasts a pair of former Super Bowl winners in Zak Deossie, who was named a team captain for the Giants, and James Develin, who returns to the Patriots after missing last season due to injury. Former Bear Bill O’Brien begins his third year as the head coach of the Houston Texans. Cornell also has two alums in the NFL, as JC Tretter will start on the Packers’ offensive line and Bryan Walters will be a key part of the Jaguars’ wide receiving corps.

Columbia and Penn are represented on active rosters by linebackers Josh Martin (Jets) and Brandon Copeland (Lions), respectively.
