Complete Ivy League Field Hockey Release in pdf format

PRINCETON, N.J. -- The 2010 Ivy League field hockey season came to a close this past weekend with Princeton winning the League title by posting a third consecutive 7-0 record in Ivy play. The Tigers, who claimed the outright title by downing Penn on Friday night, have now won six straight Ivy League titles and have earned at least a share of 16 of the past 17 Ivy Championships.

Princeton clinched the title with a 10-0 win over Penn on Friday night. Striker Kathleen Sharkey's three goals and midfielder Michelle Cesan's two tallies led the Tigers to the victory. Kieran Sweeney made ten saves in the second half alone for the Quakers.

Saturday afternoon featured the final three games of Ivy play and saw some closely contested battles as final positioning within the Ivy standings was on the line.

Brown played host to Yale where a pair of first half goals by Yale's Erica Borgo was negated by Brown goals from Leslie Springmeyer and Abigail Taft. With the score tied 2-2 late in the second half, Brown sophomore Elara Mosquera lifted the Bears to the win when she scored off a penalty corner at 64:45. The win gave the Bears a share of fourth place, as Brown notched at least three Ivy wins for the first time since 2005. Yale finished tied for second with Cornell in the League standings and with 11 overall wins, the Bulldogs posted consecutive double-digit win seasons for the first time since 2002 and 2003.

Cornell was able to tie for second with Yale in the standings by earning a 4-2 win at Dartmouth on Saturday. Catie De Stio broke a 1-1 deadlock just after halftime and Hannah Balleza netted an insurance tally five minutes later to give the Big Red a 3-1 lead. Virginia Peish's tally at 47:48 pulled the Big Green within one, but Cornell went on to earn the 4-2 win. Meagan Vakiener made 13 saves in the Dartmouth goal and the Big Green finished the season tied for fourth with Columbia and Brown in the Ivy standings as all three squads posted 3-4 marks in League play.

Columbia moved to 3-4 on the year with a win at Harvard on the final day of play. Goals by Gabby Kozlowski and Carson Christus in the game's first 20 minutes gave the Lions a 2-0 lead and they held on for a 3-1 victory.

CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Cornell senior forward Catie De Stio (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) made the final game of her career a memorable one as she scored the game-winning goal to lead the Big Red past Dartmouth, 4-2, on Marsha Dodson Field. The victory matched a school record for wins in a season (11) and tied Cornell with Yale for second place in the Ivy League.

With the goal, De Stio became Cornell's all-time career points leader (94) as well as the Big Red's career game-winning goals leader (12). De Stio's goal broke open a 1-1 game in the 42nd minute when she took a cross-crease pass from Mallory Bannon, pulled around a defender and ripped a fall-away shot inside the near post to give Cornell a lead it would not relinquish. On the defensive side of the ball, she also helped neutralize the Dartmouth attack. De Stio was the last member of the Big Red squad to earn Player of the Week honors, having done so on Sept. 22, 2009.
