Field Hockey Weekly Release - Week 2
PRINCETON, N.J. -- The 33rd season of Ivy League field hockey season got underway this past weekend as the Ivies combined to play 15 non-conference games. Cornell, Dartmouth and Harvard set the pace with two wins apiece while Brown, Columbia and Princeton also added wins. All told, the League combined 9-6 record.
Cornell posted wins over Villanova (1-0) and Lock Haven (3-2), while Dartmouth won its 2011 Big Green Classic with victories against Sacred Heart (5-0) and Longwood (4-1). Harvard opened the season with a win over Holy Cross (4-0) and followed with an overtime victory against Lafayette.
Sophomore back Bridget McGillivray proved to be Harvard’s offensive star of the opening weekend as she scored the game-winning goal versus Lafayette. She also had an assist versus Lafayette and added a goal versus Holy Cross for the first five points of her Crimson career.
The other offensive star of the weekend was Dartmouth senior Kelly Hood who had three goals and an assist for seven points in two games. With the three goals, Hood, who was a unanimous All-Ivy first team selection last season, tied the Big Green record with 47 career goals.
Brown opened its home slate with a 3-2 win over UC Davis, marking new head coach Jill Reeve’s first win while leading the Bears.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Cornell goalkeeper Carolyn Horner (Allentown,
N.J.) led the Big Red to a pair of closely contested victories over
the weekend. The sophomore, who played just nine minutes during her
freshman season, posted a shutout in Cornell’s season opening
1-0 win against Villanova at The Training Center in Spring City,
Pa. Horner then helped Cornell to a 3-2 comeback win over Lock
Haven in its home opener.
Horner made seven saves in each win over the weekend and becomes
Cornell’s first Player of the Week since Catie De
Stio shared the honor on November 9 of last season.
