Field Hockey Weekly Release - Week 5
PRINCETON, N.J. -- In what is already shaping up to be a dramatic 2011 League title race, Columbia and Dartmouth jumped to 2-0 on the year in Ivy play with wins on Saturday. In just eight Ivy games thus far, six different teams have at least one win on the year.
While home teams went 4-0 on week one, the Big Green and Lions each won week two road games to break the trend. Elsewhere, Harvard and Princeton earned home wins to even their Ivy records at 1-1.
Brown played host to Dartmouth and put the pressure on the Big Green as it held leads of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 before Kelly Hood’s ninth goal of the year at 53:30 eventually forced overtime, where Ali Savage netted the game-winning goal at 78:00. Meghan O’Donnell scored twice in a losing effort for the Bears, while Brown goalkeeper Shannon McSweeney made 14 saves.
Columbia traveled to Ithaca, N.Y. for a showdown with the Big Red and came away with a 3-1 win. With the game tied at the half, Adriana de Vries and Desi Scherf combined to score a pair of unanswered goals in the second half en route to the victory.
Princeton and Harvard recovered from week one road losses to even their respective League records with week two home wins. The Tigers downed Yale, 3-2, on the strength of two Sydney Kirby goals, including the game winner. Yale also moved to 1-1 with the loss. Harvard played host to Penn and scored the game’s first four goals on the way to a 4-1 win that moved both the Crimson and the Quakers to 1-1 in Ivy play.
Looking ahead to the Ivy games on the Oct. 1 slate, Cornell plays at Yale, Brown travels to Harvard, Columbia is at Princeton and Penn plays host to Dartmouth. The Big Green and Lions will each be looking to move to 3-0 with road wins, while a Princeton win would move the Lions and Tigers to 2-1 on the year. Harvard, Yale and Penn will also be looking to keep pace as wins would move each of those teams to 2-1, while Cornell and Brown are hitting the road in search of their first Ivy wins of the year.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Harvard senior midfielder Carly Dickson
(Victoria, B.C.), led the Crimson to a 2-0 record over the weekend.
In Saturday's 4-1 Ivy win against Penn, the senior co-captain
scored the Crimson's second goal and set up the third. She was a
force throughout the game, leading all players with five shots,
including three on goal. Then on Sunday against Bryant, Dickson set
up the game-tying goal as Harvard came from behind to win the game,
2-1. She is Harvard’s first Player of the Week since
Chloe Keating earned the honor on Sept. 7, 2010.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Dartmouth freshman forward Ali Savage (Orange,
New South Wales, Australia) proved invaluable on offense last week
for the Big Green as she scored game-winning goals in both
Dartmouth wins over the weekend. Savage followed up last
weekend’s hat trick against Bryant with the overtime winner
against Brown on Saturday in the team's first Ivy road game of the
season. Then on Sunday she added a goal and assist against Holy
Cross as Dartmouth won, 6-1. Her three points on Sunday helped push
the Big Green’s winning streak to four games (2-0 in Ivy
play). Savage has now claimed Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors
for the second consecutive week.
