PRINCETON, N.J. -- After week one of the 2012
Ivy League field hockey season, six of the eight teams have at
least one victory under their belts, with Penn and Princeton each
racing out to a 2-0 mark.
Princeton's unbeaten record is even more impressive based on their
first two opponents: No. 5 Duke and No. 13 Wake Forest. The
fourth-ranked Tigers held each of its first two adversaries to two
goals, defeating the Blue Devils, 5-2, and the Demon Deacons,
4-2.
Penn, on the other hand, is off to its first 2-0 start in over 10
years thanks to wins over Lehigh (5-2) and Towson (4-3). Brown,
Dartmouth, Harvard and Yale are each 1-1, while Columbia and
Cornell are each looking for their first win of the season. The
Lions suffered a pair of one-goal losses, falling at Richmond, 4-3
in overtime, and at VCU, 2-1. Senior goalkeeper Christie
O'Hara made 17 saves in goal for Columbia against the
Spiders. Cornell also saw solid goalkeeping during its 6-1 loss to
No. 2 North Carolina, as junior Carolyn Homer
registered a personal-best 15 saves in the contest.
Good goalie play in a tough loss seemed to be a theme for the Ivy
League in week one. Harvard junior Jenn Hatfield's
career-high 15 shots in her first career start was not enough for
the Crimson, which fell to Sacred Heart, 2-1, in double
overtime.
In Brown's 3-2 win over Vermont, a trio of Bears scored their
first collegiate goals as junior Maggie Brady,
sophomore Haley Alvarez and freshman
Hannah Rogers. Yale scored its first goal of the
season in its second game –- in fact, its first three goals
of the season –- a 3-2 win over Quinnipiac.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Princeton senior striker Kathleen Sharkey
(Moosic, Pa.) wasted no time getting back in the college groove
after spending last season training with the US National Team. The
2010 Ivy League Player of the Year led her squad to a 2-0 record
with seven goals and one assist for 15 points in the two games. She
also recorded the gamewinning score in each contest. Sharkey
factored in eight of the nine goals that the Tigers scored in their
first two games, including scoring all four against Wake
Forest.
Sharkey posted three goals and one assist in the 5-2 win over
Duke, and followed that with a four-score performance against the
Demon Deacons. The award is the sixth of her career and her first
since Nov. 9, 2010. She also earned Rookie of the Week twice in
2008. A Princeton has earned back-to-back Player of the Week honors
dating to last season, as Amanda Bird took home
the final honor in 2011.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Penn freshman attack Elizabeth Hitti (Ashland,
Mass.) was instrumental in her team's opening-weekend performance.
Hitti finished with three points on one goal and one assist in two
games.
All three of Hitti's points came in the Quakers’' 5-2 win
over Lehigh. The freshman's goal in the 58th minute broke a 2-2 tie
and proved to be the game-winner. She also assisted on Penn's
second goal of the game that gave her squad a 2-0 edge. Hitti is
the first Penn Rookie of the Week since Alex Iqbal
received the award on Oct. 18, 2011.
