PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Big 5 will induct three new
members into its Hall of Fame on Friday, February 13, including former Penn
men's basketball standout Jerome Allen. He will join Curt Fromal (La Salle)
and Susan Moran (Saint Joseph's) in being enshrined at a ceremony set for 6
p.m. inside the Donaldson Room of Weightman Hall on the campus of the University
of Pennsylvania. The Class of 2009 will also be honored on the floor of The
Palestra during halftime of the La Salle - Saint Joseph's game on Saturday,
February 14.
Since 1973, the Big 5 has been selecting players, coaches, broadcasters, sportswriters
and others who have made significant contributions to the Big 5 and its history
to become members of the Philadelphia Big 5 Hall of Fame.
Allen starred at Penn from 1991-95. He was a three-time All-Big 5 selection
and finished his career as Penn's all-time leader in assists (504) and steals
(166). He was also recognized as the Ivy League Player of the Year twice, in
1992-93 and 1993-94. After guiding the Quakers to three consecutive unbeaten
Ivy League campaigns (42 straight wins), Allen was a second-round draft pick
of the Minnesota Timberwolves in 1995. He spent two seasons in the NBA with
Minnesota, Indiana and Denver, and continues to play professionally in Italy.
Fromal completed an outstanding collegiate career as the leader of La Salle's
1964-65 NIT team. He averaged a team-best 19.2 points per game in that senior
season to earn first team UPI "Little" All-America, Big 5 and Middle
Atlantic Conference honors. He was also recognized as the MVP of the Middle
Atlantic Conference. Included in Fromal's season total of 441 points was the
memorable 34 he scored in the second half against No. 3 ranked archrival Saint
Joseph's. Fromal was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers.
Moran was a dominant player for Saint Joseph's from 1998-2002. The Tullamore,
Ireland native is the only player in Hawks' history to lead the team in both
scoring and rebounding in four consecutive seasons. Moran finished with 2,340
career points after ranking fourth in the nation in scoring (23.3 per game)
as a senior. She also was named Big 5 and Atlantic 10 Player of the Year for
the 2001-02 season. A two-time Academic All-America selection, Moran was twice
the Atlantic 10's Student-Athlete of the Year. She currently is an assistant
coach at her alma mater.
