PRINCETON, N.J. -- Ivy League men's basketball steps into the national spotlight Friday night as Princeton welcomes Harvard to Jadwin Gym in front of national television and radio audience.
The League's top two teams meet for the first time this season in a game that will be seen live on ESPNU and heard live on SIRIUS Satellite Radio Channel 130 as the Friday night edition of the Ivy League Men's Basketball Game of the Week.
Several streaks are on the line in this highly-anticipated matchup. Harvard looks to extend its current eight-game winning streak and end its 21-game losing streak to Princeton in its home arena. The Crimson's last win in Jadwin Gym came almost 21 years to the day of this game, Feb. 3, 1989. A Harvard win would mark the program's longest win streak since 1945-46, as well as tie its best Ivy start since the 1980-81 and 1990-91 seasons. The Crimson has never won at Princeton and Penn in the same weekend.
Princeton, in the midst of its longest homestand (7 games) since Dec. 9, 1945-Jan. 6, 1946, is shooting to win its first eight games at home since its 1997-98 team went a perfect 12-0 in Jadwin Gym. The Tigers enter the weekend with a 14-4 record for the first time since the 1998-99 season. Wins against Harvard and Dartmouth would give Princeton a 4-0 start in Ivy play for the third time in as many seasons.
Penn hosts Dartmouth and Harvard as well this weekend and hopes to continue its historical success against the two teams. The Quakers have swept the Dartmouth-Harvard home weekend 43 of the 53 times, split nine times and been swept just once since the League was formed. Friday's Dartmouth-Penn game is 200th meeting between the two schools, as is Saturday's game between Dartmouth and Princeton.
Columbia continues its road swing at Brown Friday night and at Yale Saturday night. The road has been kind to the Lions as of late, winning four of their last five away from home. Columbia faces a hungry Brown team looking to snap its three-game losing streak and grab its first Ivy win of the season. The battle of the boards may be the key stat in the pivotal Saturday night battle between Columbia and Yale in New Haven. Columbia is 10-3 this year when outrebounding its opponents while Yale is 7-2 when getting to the glass more often than its opponents.
Also looking for its first Ivy win coming to the weekend, Cornell takes on those same Bulldogs Friday night then travels to Providence the next night to take on Brown in the Saturday night installment of the Ivy League Men's Basketball Game of the Week on SIRIUS Satellite Radio Channel 130. The Bulldogs have won seven of the last nine meetings with Cornell at home while the Big Red is 11-1 in the last 12 contests against the Bears including wins the last eight contests between the two.
