Men's Basketball Weekend Preview for Jan. 28-29

Complete Ivy League Men's Basketball Weekly Release

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Intriguing matchups are abound for the first full Ivy weekend in men's basketball with all eight teams in action.

The 14-Game Tournament, as the Ivy round-robin schedule has been dubbed, moves into high gear with Dartmouth and Harvard hosting Columbia and Cornell and Penn and Princeton welcoming Brown and Yale. The Yale-Penn matchup Friday night and the Columbia-Dartmouth Saturday games are this weekend's Ivy League Men's Basketball Games of the Week on SIRIUS Satellite Radio Channel 130.

Two streaking squads colide Friday night in Cambridge, Mass., as Harvard and Columbia clash in a game between Ivy unbeatens. The Crimson looks to continue on its winning ways, entering the weekend on season-best six-game win streak. Harvard got some national recognition earlier this week receiving a vote in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll for the third-straight season and fourth time in six years. Columbia has has been playing well for the better part of two months. Since November 23, the Lions have won 10 of their last 12 games, eight of their last nine and have won four in a row since Jan. 5. The Lions have been winning those games by the closest of margins with their last 11 straight games decided by six points or fewer.

Winners of its last four-straight, Yale looks to extend its positive run on the road at Penn Friday and at Princeton Saturday. The Bulldogs are 2-0 in the Ivy League for the second time in the last three years. A victory Friday night victory over the Quakers would give Yale wins in its first three League games for the first time since 1999-2000.

Penn and Princeton are each playing their first Ivy games of the season and hope to start conference play on positive note. The Tigers are looking to start 2-0 in conference play for the fourth time in as many seasons while the the Quakers are happy to be home for their first home games (technically) in 52 days. Penn has split this weekend each of the past three seasons and has never been swept for the Brown-Yale home weekend. Brown will need to repeat its recent against Penn and Princeton to stay in contention for the Ivy title as the Bears swept the League's two southernmost schools on the road last year and have done so twice in the last three years.

The first full Ivy weekend will also be a philanthropic one for the Ivy League as all eight men's basketball coaches will be participating in the Coaches vs. Cancer® Suits and Sneakers awareness weekend. Brown head coach Jeese Agel, Columbia head coach Kyle Smith, Cornell head coach Bill Courtney, Dartmouth head coach Paul Cormier, Harvard head coach Tommy Amaker, Penn head coach Jerome Allen, Princeton head coach Sydney Johnson and Yale head coach James Jones and their respective staffs are joining coaches nationwide to wear sneakers with their suits for their games over the weekend to demonstrate their support for the American Cancer Society and its vision of a world with less cancer and more birthdays.
