SALT LAKE CITY -- Harvard had an historic night
in capturing its first-ever postseason win as the 14th-seeded
Crimson upset third-seeded New Mexico, 68-62, on March 21 in a West
Region second-round game in the 2013 NCAA Division I Men's
Basketball Championship at EnergySolutions Arena.
It was the first NCAA Tournament victory for Harvard, previously
0-3 in two NCAA Tournament appearances. It was also the first win
for the Crimson over a top 10 opponent, as the Lobos entered the
NCAA Tournament as the No. 10 team in the March 18 USA Today/ESPN
Coaches Poll.
Harvard now faces sixth-seeded Arizona on Saturday, March 23 at
6:10 p.m. on TNT. The broadcast team of Spero
Dedes, Doug Gottlieb and Jaime
Maggio will call the action once again from
EnergySolutions Arena. Dave Sims and Kevin
Grevey are set to call the game on the Dial Global/NCAA
Radio Network.
Harvard is 0-2 against Arizona with the two previous meetings
occurring in the 1966-67 (59-58) and the 1977-78 (83-60)
seasons.
Harvard is the lone Ivy League team in the postseason. Only one
team playing beyond the regular season is a reversal of the
League's most recent postseason fortunes as last year saw a
conference record four teams advance to the postseason -- Harvard
(NCAA Tournament), Penn and Princeton (College Basketball
Invitational) and Yale (CollegeInsider.com Tournament). The last
time the Ancient Eight only had one team play in the postseason was
following the 2008-09 season when Cornell lost to Missouri in an
NCAA Tournament first-round game in Boise, Idaho.
Harvard is making the 70th NCAA Tournament appearance for an Ivy
League team and 56th for the League since its first official season
(1956-57). Since 1939, Ivy League teams have combined for a 41-79
(.342) record in 70 appearances. Since 1957, the Ivy League has a
32-59 (.352) record in 56 appearances.
