PRINCETON, N.J. -- The gauntlet known as "The
14-Game Tournament" begins Saturday, Jan. 12 with a pair of
travel-party games between rivals in Harvard-Dartmouth and
Harvard begins its Ivy League title defense on the road against a Dartmouth squad that is one of the youngest in NCAA Division I. Both teams come into the game off wins as Harvard handled Rice 92-62 on Jan. 5 and Dartmouth got back into the win column for the first time in eight games with a 75-58 victory over Army on Jan. 8. The win gave Big Green head coach Paul Cormier his 100th manning the sidelines in Hanover, N.H.
The Crimson has taken the last six games in the series against Dartmouth, including a 54-38 win in Hanover on Jan. 21, 2012.
The I-95 rivalry is renewed when Penn and Princeton meet for the 227th time in front of a national television audience on the NBC Sports Network. Randy Moss and Dalen Cuff are slated to call the action from Jadwin Gym.
The two teams are meeting the earliest in the season, by calendar date, since the teams met on Jan. 6, 1996. Penn won that game, 57-55. Recent series history has been a run streaks. Princeton has won six of the last seven meetings. Prior to that, Penn had won five in a row from 2007-09.
The Tigers have won 17 straight Ivy League games at home, the most since the team won 26 in a row from 1996-99, and look to start League play with a win for the fifth time in six seasons.
Brown, Cornell and Yale are also in action Saturday with all three taking on Division III opponents as their final tune-ups before opening Ivy play next week. The Bears host Daniel Webster, the Big Red hosts Old Westbury and the Bulldogs host Oberlin in games with 2 p.m. starts.
