PRINCETON, N.J. -- The magical postseason run
for Ivy League men's basketball has reached its pinnacle as Yale is
set to take on Murray State in the championship game of the
CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT) on Thursday, April 3. Tipoff is
slated for 7 p.m. on the CBS Sports Network.
Yale looks to become the first Ivy League team to win a postseason tournament since Pete Carril led Princeton to the 1975 Postseason National Invitation Tournament (NIT) title. The Bulldogs captured their first three CIT victories by a total of nine points, including a three-point win over fellow Ivy foe Columbia in the quarterfinals, and has advanced to the CIT’s final game on the heels of winning three-straight road games. Yale and Columbia joined Brown to make up an all-time high of three Ivy League teams in the CIT. Yale is in the postseason for the sixth time (3 NCAA, 1 NIT, 2 CIT), while Brown made its fifth appearance (2 NCAA, 1 NIT, 1 CBI, 1 CIT) and Columbia enjoyed its fourth appearance (3 NCAA, 1 CIT) playing beyond the regular season.
In the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship, No. 12 seed Harvard answered the predictions of various pundits with a near wire-to-wire win over No. 5 seed Cincinnati in a second-round game in Spokane, Wash. The victory made the Crimson the first Ivy League team to win an NCAA Tournament game in consecutive seasons since Princeton did so in 1983 and 1984 and the first time since the bracket expanded to 64 teams in 1985. Harvard gave No. 4 seed Michigan State all it could handle in the third round, rallying from a 16-point deficit to take a 62-60 lead with 7:12 to play, but the Spartans proved to have the answer down the stretch and escaped with an 80-73 victory to advance to the Sweet 16 at Madison Square Garden.
Over in the College Basketball Invitational (CBI), Princeton advanced to the quarterfinals for the third time in five years. The Tigers opened with a 56-55 first-round win at Tulane before dropping a 72-56 decision at Fresno State in the quarterfinals to cap their 21-win season. In the win over the Green Wave, Princeton fought off a 7-0 run in the final 90 seconds to hold on to the one-point victory. In the loss to the Bulldogs, the Tigers began the second half with an inspired rally to climb out of an eight-point deficit but could not sustain that momentum to pull out the victory. League teams now stand with a 5-5 (.500) record in the CBI in five appearances.
Ivy League men's basketball is in the midst of its greatest postseason run in its 58-year history with six total wins so far, thanks to an impressive 4-1 start in its first five games. The Ivy League boasts a record five teams in the postseason and multiple teams in the postseason for the fourth time in five years. The League has three or more teams advancing to postseason play for the fourth time in conference history (2001-02, 2009-10, 2011-12 and 2013-14). The League's previous high was four postseason teams -- Harvard (NCAA), Penn and Princeton (CBI) and Yale (CIT) -- just two seasons ago.
